November 23, 2004 AUBURN, Ala. -- The two-time defending NCAA Champion Auburn men's swimming and diving team has signed five to comprise the beginning of the class of 2009, Head Coach David Marsh announced on Tuesday. Heading to the Plains will be Kristopher Findorff, Anthony Fleming, Logan Madson, Jonathan Roberts and Stephen Scheren. "I am very excited about the fall signing group. There is a great deal of versatility, confidence and quality character within the group," Marsh said. "They will be outstanding additions to our program and the Auburn University campus upon their arrival in the fall." <snip> Jon Roberts heads to Auburn from Raleigh, N.C., where he currently swims for Dan Flack and the Raleigh Swimming Association. Prior to moving to Raleigh, he swam for Rick Aronberg and Jack Hauber at the Greater Rochester Racing Raiders in Fairport, N.Y. A breaststroke and free specialist, he finished seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2004 Summer Nationals, making the Olympic Trials cut with a 1:04.20. A nine-time New York State Champion, he was on the National Junior Team in 2003. An honor roll student, he chose Auburn over Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. "Jon has tremendous potential. This year in Raleigh is his first year of doing two-session practices in a day. After watching him compete and train, I am convinced he will step right in and compete for the top-level competition of our program, including our medley relay," Marsh said. "Jon has worked on his backstroke and I look for him to be very competitive in both the individual medley and the butterfly events." "I chose Auburn mainly because of three reasons," Roberts said. "One was the team. I found the team to be nothing short of a family. The team cohesiveness and camaraderie that Steve Segerlin (Webster, N.Y.) and Luke Weniger (Pittsford, N.Y.) told me about and that I saw is amazing and there is no way to go wrong in an environment like that. A second reason is the coaches. David Marsh is obviously one of the most successful coaches in the NCAA of his time and is also one of the most knowledgeable coaches I've ever met. The assistants seem to work right along David's side and all of the coaches seem to act as one coach. The third reason is the great opportunities within Auburn's Engineering Department. My dad is an engineer, and it has always interested me to be one myself. With the combination of Athletics and Academics, I can't go wrong." <snip>
