Bob Matthews October 31, 2004 - Red Wings home-run hero Russ Derry died last week, but two of his accomplishments will remain prominent on the list of memorable numbers in Rochester sports history. Here's a sampling: .929 — Tony Jacobs' winning percentage for one season, a Red Wings
record (13-1 in 1954). 2 — Goals scored by the Rhinos in their 2-1 victory over the Major League Soccer Colorado Rapids to win the 1999 U.S. Open Cup. ... The incredibly low number of Amerks who have won the Eddie Shore Plaque as the AHL's outstanding defenseman (Steve Kraftcheck in 1959 and Al Arbour in 1965). ... Official NFL wins for the Rochester Jeffersons (2-24-2 from 1920 to 1925). 3:54.93 — Dick Buerkle's world-record time for the indoor mile
(Jan. 13, 1978). 5 — Amerks-record goals scored in one game by Donald Audette (Oct. 29, 1989). ... Nancy Lopez won her record fifth straight LPGA tournament at Locust Hill in 1978. 6 — Calder Cups won by the Amerks. ... The round Charlie Gouse and Sam Nolan were saved by the bell after briefly knocking each other out in their 1916 bout for Rochester's heavyweight title. 7 — Jack Nicklaus' then-record PGA Championship victory margin
over Andy Bean at Oak Hill in 1980. 9 — The Amerks number retired in honor of Dick Gamble and Jody
Gage. 10 — International League-most times the Red Wings have won the Governors' Cup. ... Times the Amerks have lost in the Calder Cup finals. 11 — Golf majors won by Rochester's Walter Hagen. 13 — The number of wins in Fio Rito's 15 starts at Finger Lakes Racetrack from 1979 to 1981. "The Secretariat of Finger Lakes" was the first New York state-bred horse to win a Grade I stakes race (the Whitney at Saratoga in 1981). 14 — Goals by teenage sensation Branko Segota in 13 games with the Lancers in 1979. ... Aquinas legend Don Holleder's uniform number his senior year at Army. He was No. 84 as an All-American but switched numbers and positions in a manpower pinch and quarterbacked the Cadets to a 14-6 upset win in the 1955 Army-Navy game. 17 — Gary Clark's consecutive Section V swimming titles at Fairport. 18 — Roric Harrison's Red Wings-record strikeouts in one game (vs. Toledo July 12, 1971). 19 — Red Wings' record winning streak (in 1953). ...
