Fifteen inductees selected for Frontier's Walk of Fame

(February 6, 2004) — This year’s Frontier Field Walk of Fame class
comprises 15 people, one legendary football team and the area’s largest
supermarket chain.
The newest inductees were announced at Thursday night’s Rochester Press-Radio Club Day of Champions dinner. They will be formally inducted this summer on a date to be announced. The class of 2004: <snip> Amateur coaches Gary Clark — A fixture as Fairport High’s swim coach for 25 years, his teams finished as the top-ranked team in the state 13 times, and won an incredible 17 consecutive Section V and <18 consecutive> Monroe County championships. More than 60 swimmers, known as “Clark’s Sharks,’’ went on to earn All-America honors. Clark retired in 1999. Vito Costanza — A legendary coach at Edison Tech in football, basketball and baseball in the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, he also was an exceptional and devoted physical education teacher at the school. Now retired, he was named Section V Coach of the Year in b basketball before the award was split into several classes. Terry Gurnett — The Spencerport High graduate is the winningest coach in NCAA Division III women’s soccer history, with a 318-101-45 record in 27 seasons. Gurnett led UR to national titles in 1986 and ‘87 and was selected NCAA Coach of the Decade for women’s soccer in the 1980s. His teams have been ranked in the national top 25 every year for the past 21 seasons and have made 17 consecutive trips to the postseason. Marilyn Thomas — The longtime Fairport High girls swimming coach compiled a 210-12 record, led the Red Raiders to six consecutive state titles from 1985-90 and won 12 consecutive Section V championships from 1979-90.
