Swimmers 2nd at Sectionals

     

The Fairport swimmers finished second in the Section 5 Class A meet last Saturday at the Webster Aquatic Center. The Red Raiders amassed 395 points as Pittsford captured first place with 464 points. Webster came in third with 314.5 points, followed by Penfield (227) and Brockport (189).

Fairport senior and co-captain, Peter Koenig was recognized in the Sportsmanship category and coach Mike Kennedy was named Coach of the Year. Irondequoit swimmer Ricky Henehan was named Swimmer of the Meet.

The 200 medley relay team of Koenig, Connor Harrington, Dylan Scheemaker, and Jim Beaudry started off by capturing first place in a state qualifying (and All-American consideration) time of 1 minute, 38.99 seconds.

In the 200 free, Tyler Benson, Beaudry, Jon Steffen, and Aria Salehi finished 6th, 7th, 9th and 16th respectively.

Koenig finished third in the 200 individual medley, posting a state qualifying time of 2:00.57. Harrington (10th), Matt McGrath (14th), and Kyle Mihaljevic (15th) also placed.

Scheemaker finished third in the fastest race of the afternoon, the 50 freestyle, posting a state qualifying time of 22.34. Jake Robbins touched for seventh place, Brendan McLaughlin finished ninth, and Tyler Santini took 18th.

The diving sectionals were held the previous weekend, but the awards were presented at the swimming finals. Sophomore Dhruv Tyagi dove to a first place finish and state qualifying total of 510. His combined point total set a new school record for Fairport. Divers Jon Snelgrove, Andrew Gasbarre, and Peter Shipman finished 11th, 15th and 17th, respectively.

The 50 free served as a warm up for Scheemaker as he swam the very next event, the 100 butterfly and captured first place with a state qualifying time of 53.45. Kyle Kauffman, Jake Horowitz, and Brandon Georger touched for 10th , 11th and 24th places.

In the 100 free, senior Beaudry swam a state qualifying time of 49.43 and took home fourth place. Robbins was 13th as Jake Bianchi finished 19th and McLaugh lin 20th.

In the 500 free, Benson, Steffen, Salehi, and Andrew Koenig touched for 5th, 8th, 16th and 19th places.

Fairport’s 200 free relay team of McLaughlin, Bianchi, Santini, and Robbins swam to a fifth place finish.

The Red Raiders picked up 39 points in their strong event, the 100 back as Peter Koenig finished in first place with a state qualifying time of 53.12. Tyagi, Horowitz, and Bianchi touched for 4th, 14th, and 16th places respectively.

Fairport had another strong finish in the 100 breast as Mihaljevic, Kauffman, Harrington, and McGrath placed 3rd, 7th, 8th and 9th respectively.

Fairport ended the meet with an exciting second place finish in the 400 free relay. The team of Beaudry, Scheemaker, Peter Koenig, and Robbins swam a state qualifying time of 3:17.06.

Coaches Mike Kennedy, Ryan Callan, and Dave Salmon will take six Fairport athletes to the New York State Championship at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island on Feb. 29 and March 1.
