Swimmers avenge loss to Penfield

Fairport’s depth in boys swimming and diving was a key factor in defeating Penfield, 109-77, last Tuesday at Penfield. The Red Raiders were pumped up after defeating the Webster Lakers the previous week, and were ready to face the Patriots to avenge last year’s loss.

Fairport entered three teams in the 200 medley relay. The team of Peter Koenig, Kyle Mihaljevic, Jake Horowitz, and Brendan McLaughlin touched for first place with a winning time of 1:46.55, while the team of Dhruv Tyagi, Connor Harrington, Dylan Scheemaker, and Jake Robbins finished second, a close .29 seconds later. Jake Bianchi, Matt McGrath, Kyle Kauffman, and Tyler Santini took fifth place.

Tyler Benson won the 200 free (1:53.57) for the Raiders, while Jim Beaudry and Aria
Salehi finished third and fifth, respectively. Salehi’s time was a personal best.

Fairport claimed second, third and fourth places in the next two events, the 200 individual medley (Steffen, Harrington, and McGrath) and the 50 free (Scheemaker, Robbins, and McLaughlin).

Divers Tyagi, Jon Snelgrove, and Peter Shipman each performed six dives with varying degrees of difficulty. Tyagi’s total point score of 256.55 claimed first place; Snelgrove took fifth and Shipman sixth. Tyagi remains undefeated in his signature
event.

Another 2-3-4 finish by Kauffman, Steffen, and Horowitz in the 100 butterfly brought the score to 56-38. Horowitz swam a personal best time and all three Fairport swimmers easily qualified for the sectional meet.

Seniors Beaudry and Koenig tied for second place in the 100 free as Bianchi touched fifth.

In the 500 free, Benson swam to a second place finish, while McGrath and Salehi placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Fairport finished 2-3-4 in the 200 free relay. Beaudry, Robbins, Scheemaker, and
Santini touched for second; Tyagi, Peter Koenig, McLaughlin, and Bianchi finished third as Steffen, Brandon Georger, Andrew Koenig, and Benson took fourth.

Tyagi pulled off his second first place finish in an exciting 100 back race by taking
first in 59.79 seconds, .07 seconds ahead of his Penfield opponent. Horowitz and Bianchi added points to Fairport’s score by claiming fourth and fifth places.

A 1-2-3 sweep by Mihaljevic (1:07.41), Harrington, and Kauffman in the 100 breast
cemented the victory for the Red Raiders.

The 400 free relay team of Scheemaker, Beaudry, Peter Koenig, and Robbins won in 3:26.21. Tyagi, McLaughlin, Steffen, and Horowitz came in third.

Fairport is home to Rush-Henrietta on Tuesday.
