Fairport swimmers splash past WebsterBy Craig Potter With the meet on the line, and Webster needing to finish 1-2 in the 400 free relay last Thursday at Fairport, the Red Raiders held off the Lakers to prevail in the meet, 100-86. After the first leg of the 400 free relay, the Lakers held the 1-2 positions, however Fairport’s second leg swimmer, Jake Robbins, overtook the second spot, and Brendan McLaughlin and Jim Beaudry secured the victory as the Raiders won the race in 3:26.47, and sealed the victory. “Jake Robbins did a tremendous job,” said Fairport coach Mike Kennedy. “All our kids did. It's a great win for our program, but our ultimate goal is sectionals. “It's always a great meet. We've got the utmost respect for Webster and Darrell Byerts, their head coach. We knew it was going to be a tough meet because he does a great job over the years. We swam extremely well. The kids did a great job.” Fairport never trailed as the Raiders went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay to take early command. The team of Peter Koenig, Connor Harrington, Jake Horowitz, and Brendan McLaughlin won in 1:44.83. The Lakers rebounded with a 1-2 finish in the 200 free by the Wahl brothers, Zack and Matt. Zack Wahl’s time was 1:49.88. Paul Garman won the 200 individual medley (2:07.07) for Webster, but the Raiders placed 2-3-4 by Koenig, Harrington, and Matt McGrath, respectively. “There's always surprises in a big meet,” Kennedy said. “If we can make the surprises go more in our end, we'll be okay. Just take one event at a time.” Taylor Ross of Webster won the 50 free (22.71), but Dylan Scheemaker, Jim Beaudry, and Robbins finished 2-3-4 to once again add to the Fairport lead. FHS diver Dhruv Tyagi won with 270.35 points, but the Lakers divers went 2-3-4 as the visitors started to comeback. Zack Wahl earned his second win in the 100 butterfly (55.21), and Webster pulled to within two (56-54) with a 1-3 finish in the 100 free. Ross captured his second win in 49.45. The teams seesawed first in the remaining events as the Lakers stayed within striking distance. Fairport’s Tyler Benson splashed to a win in the 500 free (5:02.68). Jon Steffen edged Webster’s Wade Piotrowski by .17 seconds for third place. Cody Grosser took second for the Lakers. The Webster team of Ross, Matt Wahl, Garman, and Zack Wahl won the 200 free relay (1:30.65). Fairport went 1-2 in the 100 back as Koenig placed first (56.95) with Tyagi second by .72 seconds ahead of Webster’s Ethan Mahony. Garman won his second race in the 100 breast (1:06.81) for Webster, but Harrington and Kyle Mihaljevic placed 2-3 for the Raiders. “Great competition brings out great swims,” Byerts said. “We had three
things against going into the meet. We had to go to the Fairport pool, they
were coming off a loss to Pittsford, and they wanted to avenge last year’s
loss. “We had 22 life best times and qualified three more state times. Fairport
has a quality program. I give my team credit because they never gave up
after the opening relay.” Originally published in the Perinton-Fairport Post
