Fairport swims past Blue Devils

The Fairport girls swimming and diving team began its quest for the Section 5 Class A title with a 101-81 victory over Brockport last Thursday at home.

The Lady Red Raiders never trailed, as they went 1-2 in the opening 200 medley relay, but the Lady Blue Devils fought back to pull within four points (70-66) following the 200 free relay.

Each team earned eight points in the 100 backstroke, but the Raiders secured the meet by going 1-2-3 in the 100 breaststroke.

Carrie Ostrom won the 100 breast in 1 minute, 15 seconds. Emily Gardner finished second with Ester Shin taking third.

Fairport held a 91-77 advantage after the event, then won the 400 free relay. The team of Jenna Wood, Nadia Keenan, Andrea Hageman, and April Miller held off a furious kick by the Brockport's anchor leg swimmer, Victoria Brannan, to win in 4:02.05. The Blue Devils took second in 4:03.04.

Gardner and Ostrom came in 1-2 in the 200 free as Gardner's time was 2:02.39.

Melanie Baron led a 1-2-3 Fairport finish in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.32. Carly Coughlin placed second as Michelle Dufault took third.

Brockport won the 50 free, but Kaitlin Holden finished second with Shin third for Fairport as the Raiders established their widest margin of 26 points (44-18).

Jennifer Chiang won the diving event for the Raiders with 236.35 points.

The Blue Devils made their run starting with the 100 butterfly.

Brannan placed first, but Wood and Staci Woytash took second and third, respectively for the Raiders.

Brockport went 1-2-3 in the 100 free, and sliced the deficit to 12 (59-47). Nicole Stuver came in second for Fairport.

The visitors placed 1-2-5 in the 500 free, and won the 200 free relay to pull with four points at 70-66.

Kelley Anzalone won the 100 back for Brockport, but Brenna O'Neill and Woytash placed second and third, respectively for Fairport, as Stephanie Gross was fifth to earn an equal split in points.

Fairport's next meet is on Tuesday versus Greece Athena at Greece Olympia.

JV swimmers too much for Brockport

The Fairport junior varsity girls swimming and diving team opened its season at home last Thursday with a 95- 87 victory over Brockport.

The results are as follows: 200 medley relay team of Jessica Nemeth, Kelly Thompson, Chelsey Barker, and Theresa Rakiewicz finished second; third place - Ashley Mahyor, Dana Hogg, Megan Mulhern, Rachel Misch; and fourth - Kelsey Hawkins-Rusch, Devon Phelan-Patton, Masha Vorobeychik, and Jessica Perrone.

In the 200 free, Lindsey Haun won with Ashley Whitney second, and Melissa Hofer fourth. In the 200 IM, Nemeth took second with Barker third, and Thompson fifth; and in the 50 free, Mish finished third with Carly Swieringa fourth and Rakiewicz fifth. In the 50 butterfly, Haun placed third, Barker fourth, and Mulhern fifth.

Courtney Pearsall won the 100 free as Hofer took second and Vorobeychik fifth. The 500 free saw Nemeth finish second, Whitney third, and Rakiewicz fourth. The 200 free relay team of Mulhern, Hogg, Haun, and Thompson placed second with the team of Mahyor, Hofer, Pearsall, and Swieringa taking third, and Lacey Davenport, Phelan-Patton, Allison Yrinec, and Perrone came in fifth.

The 100 back saw Mulhern third, Misch fifth, and Hawkins-Rusch sixth. The 100 breast had Thompson second, Hogg third, ad Mahyor fourth.

The Fairport team of Rakiewicz, Haun, Barker, and Nemeth captured the 400 free relay. Placing second were Swieringa, Vorobeychik, Whitney, and Pearsall; and in fourth were Phelan-Patton, Hawkins- Rusch, Yrinec, and Davenport.

Junior varsity diver Marie Stumbo took first against Brockport.
