Pittsford coasts past Fairport to cap perfect season

by James Johnson

Pittsford's swimming team finished its regular season with a strong kick Tuesday.

Andrew Kuter and Nathan French each won a pair of individual races during Pittsford's convincing 113-73 win over rival Fairport at Mendon.

Pittsford extended its winning streak in dual meets to 49 and clinched its fourth consecutive Monroe County Division I title.

The four-time defending Section V Class A champions closed their season with victories over previously undefeated Webster Schroeder, Penfield and Canandaigua, plus Fairport, the team Pittsford replaced as Section V's best.

"We really fired up for each of those meets and came out ahead in the end," junior Sean McManus said.

Kuter, a junior at Pittsford Sutherland, beat the state meet cut times during his victories in the 50- (22.52 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (49.66) races.

Pittsford's 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays also hit state "magic" times with Kuter's help. Matt Lobban, Kenny Pink, McManus and Kuter swam the 200 medley in 1:40.54. Kuter, Jim Prezzano, Pink and French covered the 200 freestyle in 1:29.99.

French, a junior at Pittsford Mendon, also finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:47.54) and beat the state cut time in the 500 freestyle (4:44.77).

Fairport's runner-up group of Peter Koenig, Jake Fisher, Dylan Scheemaker and Jim Beaudry in the 200 medley relay also beat the state "magic" time with a 1:40.62 effort.

Fisher led three swimmers who topped the 100 breaststroke state cut time. His was 1:00.86, followed by Pittsford's Pink (1:02.10) and McManus (1:02.67).

Pink's performance included a 2:01.79 in the 200 IM, which was also faster than the state cutoff.

Fairport meets rival Pittsford in final meet

The Fairport Red Raiders boys swimming and diving team traveled to Pittsford for their last dual meet of the season. The rivalry between these two teams is legendary
– it is similar to the Fairport – Rush-Henrietta basketball rivalry.

At every meet this season, Fairport fans have outnumbered the opponent’s fans. This meet was no exception; the Pittsford stands were filled to capacity with Red Raider fans. Parents, grandparents, principals, teachers, alumni and members of the Fairport girls swimming and diving team all came to cheer for the team. The girls’ team came away with a win against Pittsford this year and they were hoping to see the boys do the same. However, despite the fan base and the cheering, the Red Raiders were unable to swim away with the win.

The meet got off to a great start with an exciting 200 medley relay. The team of Peter Koenig, Jake Fisher, Dylan Scheemaker and Jim Beaudry were touched out of
first place by .08 seconds. Their time of 1:40.62 qualifies them for the state meet in
March. The team of Nate Jones, Chris Razavi, Connor Harrington and Brendan McLaughlin finished third with a time of 1:48.01.

The 200 freestyle trio of Jon Steffen, Beaudry and Matt McGrath placed 3rd, 5th
and 6th. The strong swimming of Fisher, Connor Harrington and Razavi added
nine points by swimming to a 2-3-4 finish in the 200 individual medley.

In the fastest race of the afternoon, the 50 free, the Red Raiders added another
four points to the score as Scheemaker, McLaughlin and Jake Robbins finished third, fifth and sixth.

There was anticipation in the air for the next event, the one-meter diving. Diving for Fairport were freshmen Dhruv Tyagi and Jordan Ingerick. They faced a much more experienced diving team of two seniors and a sophomore. Each diver performed
six dives. When the results were announced that Tyagi took first place and Ingerick,
third, the Fairport crowd went wild.

After the meet, Dave Salmon, the Red Raider diving coach, said “Pulling first and third in diving at Pittsford was great. It not only helped the team a great deal, but ended freshman Dhruv Tyagi’s undefeated dual meet season with a bang.”

The excitement from diving carried into the 100 butterfly as Koenig, Scheemaker and
Harrington swam for a 2-3-5 finish, splitting the points equally with Pittsford. The
100 freestyle team of Beaudry, Robbins and Jones placed second, fifth and sixth.

Fairport picked up 10 more points in the 100 back, as Koenig, Jones and Tyagi finished first, third and fifth. Koenig’s time of 56.19 qualifies him for the state meet.

Fisher, ranked first in New York in the 100 breast, easily bested the competition with a winning, and state qualifying, time of 1:00.86. Teammates Razavi and Kyle Mihaljevic swam to fourth and sixth place, respectively.

Fairport entered two teams in the 400 freestyle relay event. The team of Jones,
Robbins, Steffen and Koenig swam to a second place finish with a time of 3:33.68 and McLaughlin, Salehi, Tyagi and Mihaljevic touched for fourth place with a time of 3:49.90.

Coach Mike Kennedy said after the meet “We came in as one team; we came out with one win and one loss. I’m excited about our JV team, as they are our future The last time our JV boys were undefeated was during the 1993-1994 season.”

The final score was Fairport 73; Pittsford 113.

Fairport JV swimmers complete perfect season

1993 was a great season for the Fairport junior varsity swimmers, but that was 15 years ago. On Jan. 30, with first place and a perfect season on the line, the 2007 JV Red Raiders traveled to Pittsford, the team that has held onto the first place position for the past 14 years.

A crowded house, evenly divided with Fairport and Pittsford fans were ready for the showdown and the 200 medley relay teams kicked it off. Fairport’s Jacob Bianchi, Kyle Kauffman, Zakk Vice and Tyler Santini swam to a first place finish with a time
1:58.16 they were followed by Raiders Jacob Horowitz, Jim Rafoth, Brandon Georger and Andrew Koenig.

Benson then continued his season domination in the 200 free with a first place finish and a time of 2:06.99. Kyle Koehler touched third and Ted Rakeiwicz fourth giving the Raiders 11 points in the event.

Pittsford came back strong in the 200 IM taking first and second, Vice touched third with a 2:32.33. The Raiders claimed three of the four top spots in the 50 free with
Jonah King sprinting to first (25.26), Bianchi and Santini followed him to the wall.

With the crowd watching with amazement the divers then demonstrated some beautiful maneuvers off the boards. Jon Snelgrove and Peter Shipman dove to second and third place finishes with Nick Greco closely behind. “All 3 JV divers did an outstanding job and had their best meet of the year. I couldn’t have been happier
with the way they competed,” stated diving coach Dave Salmon.

The two teams showed they were evenly split in the following events. Pittsford and Fairport tied in points for the 100 butterfly and the 100 free.

Kauffman, Koehler and Vice swam strong races in the fly with King touching first in the free.

With the score 61-49 Fairport leading into the 500 free, Pittsford swimmers were looking for a 1, 2, 3 finish in the event. Benson had other ideas as his 5:32.35 was first and the three Pittsford swimmers had to settle for the next three spots.

With the crowd chanting for the Fairport relay teams, Bianchi, King, Vice and Benson’s 1:45.00 touched first, taking third was Koehler, Sean Keyes, Mike Lopes and Jon Nemeth.

Scoring for the Raiders in the 100 back were Bianchi, Horowitz and Koenig. Bianchi’s 1:07.22 narrowly touched out Pittsford for first.

Kauffman led the 100 breast with his 1:12.95 finish followed by Rafoth and Georger.

Fairport had its perfect season and first place finish in the division. Fairport 106, Pittsford 80.

Coach Steve Hawkins- Rusch could not have been more pleased with his team. “They swam every event I asked them to. They practiced really well all season, and they just approached swimming with a great attitude. It was really an enjoyable year and their hard work and efforts paid off.”
