Fairport captures 22nd Spencerport Relays crown
On Thursday, Dec. 21, the Fairport varsity swimming and diving team
traveled to Spencerport for the second time in a week. This time, the event
was for the 25th annual Holiday Swim Relay meet hosted by the Spencerport
Rangers.
In addition to the Spencerport Rangers and the Fairport Red Raiders, the
teams invited to participate were the Irondequoit Eagles, the Churchville
Chili Saints, the Brockport Blue Devils and the Livonia Bulldogs.
The Spencerport Relay meet has been a Fairport tradition since 1982.
Fairport and
Spencerport are the only two teams that have competed for all 25 years.
Coach Mike
Kennedy and his team were looking to continue the winning tradition, having
won this
meet 21 times in the last 24 years. The team did not disappoint their
coaches or their
fans, ending the meet with an exciting 22nd win.
The meet is made up entirely of relays, with one team from each school
competing
in each event. Fairport began the meet with a solid win in the 200 medley
relay. The team of Peter Koenig, Chris Razavi, Dylan Scheemaker and Brendan
McLaughlin took first place with a five-second lead.
The second event was the 800 free relay. Jon Steffen, Matt McGrath, Kyle
Mihaljevic
and Connor Harrington swam an exciting race, finishing second, only .25
seconds in front of the third place Brockport team. All four swimmers
recorded personal best times.
The next event was the 200 butterfly relay with the team of Nate Jones,
Jon Steffen,
Dhruv Tyagi, and Scheemaker. Fairport placed third, with Jones and Tyagi
recording best times. After this race, Fairport was tied for first place
with Livonia.
The Red Raiders were determined to take the outright lead and did so by
winning the 200 breast relay. The team of Mihaljevic, Connor Harrington,
Razavi and Kyle Kauffman easily bested the rest of the field.
The diving team of Jordan Ingerick, Tyagi, Peter Shipman and Colin
Endsley wowed the crowd and the officials, diving to a first place finish.
An unfortunate disqualification in the 400 medley relay meant that the
Red Raiders
did not pick up any additional points.
The 400 free relay was the next event. McLaughlin, Scheemaker,
Mihaljevic and
Kauffman finished in second place, 11 seconds ahead of Spencerport. Both
McLaughlin and Scheemaker posted personal best times for their swims.
The 200 backstroke relay, comprised of Jones, Tyagi, McGrath and Koenig,
added 10 more points to Fairport’s lead by swimming to a second place finish
behind Irondequoit.
Fairport’s next first place finish came in the 400 IM relay. Each leg of
the relay
team swam a 100 individual medley. The team of Jake Fisher, Razavi,
Harrington and Koenig posted a winning time of 4:03.84; 31 seconds ahead of
the Spencerport Rangers.
The last event was the 200 free relay. McLaughlin, Fisher, Kauffman and
Ingerick
swam to an exciting fourth place finish ahead of Churchville Chili. Both
Kauffman
and Ingerick swam best times.
The final score of the meet was Fairport 100; Livonia 78; Spencerport
78; Irondequoit 70; Brockport 48 and Churchville 38.
