Pittsford wins water polo crown in OT

The Red Raiders win one game on Friday, but miss semifinals.

November 25, 2007 - Pittsford won its second straight water polo championship on Saturday, but it wasn’t easy.

The Panthers needed two overtimes to defeat a strong Webster squad 10-8 in the
championship game of the 33rd annual Pittsford Invitational Water Polo Benefit.

Played last Friday and Saturday at the Pittsford Mendon High School pool, the event featured eight area high school teams.

Invited to play in the Friday, Nov. 24, morning session were Fairport, Webster, Greece Arcadia and Greece Athena.

The four teams selected to play in Friday’s afternoon round robin were Pittsford,
Penfield, Churchville-Chili and Gates Chili.

The top two teams from each round robin advanced to Saturday’s semifinals and finals. Saturday’s games were some of the closest and most exciting in the long

history of the event.

With 17 seconds to go in the championship game between Pittsford and Webster, the Panthers appeared to have scored the game-winning goal. However an infraction
was called prior to the score and the goal was erased setting up the two-overtime playoff. Pittsford finally prevailed 10-8 to win the championship.

Once again, the American Diabetes Association benefited from the event. The swimmers raised $2152 for the local chapter of the ADA with ticket sales, refreshment sales and team donations.

To reach the finals, Pittsford stopped Athena 14-5 in one semifinal and Webster
needed overtime to beat Penfield 9-8 in the other semifinal.

The results of the Friday’s morning games were surprising with last year’s finalist
Fairport missing the semifinals. Webster defeated Arcadia 16-6; Athena topped Fairport 9-4; Webster defeated Fairport 12-7; Athena defeated Arcadia 19-6; Webster topped Athena 13-6 and Fairport defeated Arcadia 18-3.

In the afternoon games, Penfield defeated Churchville-Chili 8-2; Pittsford beat Gates Chili 19-4; Churchville-Chili topped Gates Chili 13-11, Pittsford topped Penfield 9-7; Pittsford defeated Churchville-Chili 16- 7 and Penfield defeated Gates Chili 14-6.

Pittsford grad Seth Sealfon was head referee and general coordinator of the event. He also provided the official goals used this year for the first time. Pittsford coach
Mark Morris was again the tournament director.
