Erin McGraw breaks records in the 200 free, 100 butterfly, 200 free
relay and 400 free relay.
November 11, 2006 — Swimmers place 2nd in sectionals
Fairport girl's varsity swimming and diving team took its undefeated streak
and top ranking in Section 5 into the Webster Aquatic Center on Thursday,
Nov. 9, for the preliminaries of Class A swimming and diving.
In the first event of the afternoon, the 200 medley relay, Fairport swimmers
Emily Gardner, Andrea Hageman, Stephanie Gross and Kaitlin Holden placed
fourth with a time 1:54.28.
In the second event, the 200 free, Erin McGraw (1:52.20), Carrie Ostrom
(2:01.83), Katelin Webster (2:05.63) and Tiffany Chiang (2:06.02) placed
first, 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively.
The 200 individual medley had Fairport She-Sharks Jenna Wood (2:11.04),
Lauren Dufault (2:11.45), Emily Gardner (2:15.14), and Esther Shin (2:22.99)
placing first, second, fifth and 10th.
Fairport swimmers Devina Tyagi, Meghan Ingerick, Morgan Reisch and Kaitlin
Holden all competed in the 50 free. Devina placed fourth while teammates
Meghan, Morgan and Kaitlin placed 13th, 16th and 19th amongst 42 swimmers.
Diving sectionals had occurred the prior week at Hilton Jr. High School.
Fairport's Jenny Chiang and Jen Juncosa, were poised and ready to meet the
competition.
Juncosa finished the competition in 16th place while Chiang, finished in
first place with a combined point score of 486.70 and state qualifying score
after two days of diving competition. Local rival Pittsford finished more
than 149 points behind Chiang.
In the 100 butterfly, Fairport's McGraw (56.29), Stephanie Gross (1:01.23),
Staci Woytash (1:04.18) and Esther Shin (1:05.03) all finished in the top
sixteen swimmers. Erin led the way finishing in first place, while Stephanie
finished in sixth, Staci in ninth and Esther in 12th.
In the 100 free, Fairport senior Lauren Dufault swam a 53.95 to finish in
second place while teammates Katelin Webster swam a 57.27 for ninth place,
Morgan Reisch swam a 57.55 for 10th place and Tiffany Chiang swam a 58.45
for 14th place.
The 500 free was next, the longest event of the sectional meet. Fairport She
Sharks Emily Gardner finished prelims in seventh place (5:21.94), Carrie
Ostrom in ninth place (5:26.94), Nicole Stuver in 16th place (5:46.71) and
Kelly O'Keefe 17th place (5:51.17).
Fairport continued to show its strength in the 200 freestyle relay. The
relay of Morgan Reisch, Erin McGraw, Katelin Webster and Lauren Dufault
placed third with a time of 1:41.57.
Fairport continued to add to the score in the 100 back. Devina Tyagi
finished in fourth place with a time of 1:00.80, Meghan Ingerick finished in
ninth with a time of 1:03.69, Brenna O'Neill finished in 10th with a time of
1:04.36 and Staci Woytash finished in 11th place with at time of 1:04.84.
In the next to last event, the 100 breast, Fairport swimmers Jenna Wood
(1:09.32), Andrea Hageman (1:10.68), Stephanie Gross (1:12.44) and April
Miller (1:15.63) placed third, fourth, eighth, and seventeenth respectively.
The Fairport Swim and Dive Team wrapped up the last event of the afternoon,
the 400 free relay, with the relay of Carrie Ostrom, Emily Gardner, Erin
McGraw and Lauren Dufault finishing in second place with a state qualifying
time of 3:42.29.
Section 5 Class A swimming finals were held on the afternoon of Saturday,
Nov. 11. The Fairport women had placed a number of swimmers in the top 16
places and were ready to improve their times and positions heading into the
finals.
The competition started with the 200 medley relay. The Fairport relay of
Emily Gardner, Andrea Hageman, Stephanie Gross and Morgan Reisch finished in
fourth place overall and a state qualifying time of 1:52.66.
The 200 free was the first of many great accomplishments during the
afternoon for Erin McGraw. She broke her own meet record with a first place
finish and a time of 1:51.49. Carrie Ostrom finished the 200 free with a
time of 2:00.00 (10th), Katelin Webster finished with a time of 2:03.80
(11th) and Tiffany Chiang finished with a time of 2:04.48 (12th).
She-Shark's Lauren Dufault, Jenna Wood, Emily Gardner and Esther Shin all
swam the 200 individual medley. Dufault (2:08.31) - first place, Wood
(2:09.83) - second place and Gardner (2:10.85) - fourth place all qualified
for states. Teammate Esther Shin added to the overall Fairport point total
with a time of 2:23.55 (13th place).
Tyagi finished second in the 50 free with a state qualifying time of 24.63.
She was joined by teammates Morgan Reisch (26.25 - 12th) and Meghan Ingerick
(26.35 - 13th).
McGraw's next accomplishment was breaking the meet record and Section 5
record in the 100 butterfly. Her first place finishing time was 55.67.
Stephanie Gross finished in fifth place (1:01.15), Staci Woytash finished in
ninth place (1:03.52), and Esther Shin finished in 14th place (1:06.05).
Dufault led Fairport in the 100 free with a second place finish and state
qualifying time (53.25). Teammates Katelin Webster finished with a time of
56.65 (ninth place), Morgan Reisch finished with a time of 57.01 (10th
place) and Tiffany Chiang finished with a time of 57.97 (12th place).
Fairport's depth continued to add points in the 500 freestyle. Gardner
(5:12.21) finished in third place with a state qualifying time. Teammates
Carrie Ostrom (5:20.68) finished in ninth place and Nicole Stuver (5:46.79)
finished in 16th place.
The 200 freestyle relay showed Fairport's dominance over Section 5
competition. The Fairport relay of McGraw, Tyagi, Wood and Dufault set not
only a meet record, but a Section 5 record and New York state record with a
winning time of 1:36.68.
In the 100 back, Tyagi finished in sixth place with a time of 1:01.19 and a
state qualifying time. Teammates Brenna O'Neill finished in ninth place with
a time of 1:03.45, Meghan Ingerick finished in 10th place with a time of
1:03.92 and Staci Woytash finished in 11th place with a time of 1:04.78.
In the 100 breast, Wood claimed first place with a state qualifying time of
1:07.83. Teammates Andrea Hageman finished in fifth place (1:10.77) and
Stephanie Gross finished in seventh place (1:12.18).
In the final event of the Section 5 Class A championship meet, the 400
freestyle relay, Fairport continued their show of strength over rival
Pittsford. The Fairport relay of McGraw, Dufault, Wood, and Tyagi placed
first with a meet and Section 5 record time of 3:33.13. This same Fairport
relay holds the New York state record of 3:33.00 which they set last year.
Fairport tallied a total of 441.50 points for the Section 5 Swimming and
Diving Championship, placing second to rival Pittsford.
Fairport heads to Erie Community College (ECC) in Buffalo for the State
Championships this weekend.
