(November 12, 2006) — Erin McGraw had one of her finest days as a swimmer at the Section V Class A Championships at Webster Aquatic Center Saturday, but it was Pittsford that showcased the better team.

The Fairport senior finished the meet with three Section V records, a state record, and a meet record, but the Panthers won the girls' team title for the fifth straight year with a score of 533.5.

Fairport finished second with 441.5.

McGraw broke her own meet record in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.49), easily broke the Section V record in the 100 butterfly (55.67), and helped set a state record in the 200 relay (1:36.68) and a Section V record in the 400 relay (3:33.13).

McGraw, who recently committed to Colgate University, was either the defending state champion, or part of the defending state champion in each of the four events.

"It definitely ranks as one of the best days I've had," said McGraw, who also claimed her third straight Swimmer of the Meet. "I love the competition in Section V and I love racing."

The Red Raiders may have caused most of the excitement, but Jenny Lewis and the rest of the Pittsford squad reminded everyone that they are still the team to beat.

Lewis won the 100 freestyle (52.51) and 100 backstroke (56.67) and was on the winning 200 medley relay team.

"I felt good but there's always room for improvement," Lewis said. "I'm very critical of how I swim."

The Panthers had at least two swimmers in each of the individual finals and as many as four in three of the events.

"We have kids that have enough talent to compete for first place," Pittsford coach Marty Keating said. "But because we know it's going to take four athletes scoring well, we emphasize the depth more than we do being a star."

The state competition is Friday and Saturday at Erie Community College.
