Empire Invitational

Fairport ended the week with the Empire Invitational at Owego Free Academy in Owego, N.Y.

Other teams competing at this two-day event were Liverpool, Owego Free Academy, Ithaca, New Hartford, Pittsford and Victor.

The Invitational started on Friday evening with the one-meter diving event. Fairport's Jenny Chiang started the session with a solid performance and a first place victory. She claimed first place with 446.60 points, 88 points ahead of second place.

Saturday's session began with the 200 medley relay. Fairport's Devina Tyagi, Jenna Wood, Lauren Dufault and Erin McGraw swam to a second place finish out of 26 relays with a time of 1:51.52. Fairport also swam the relays of Brenna O'Neill, Andrea Hageman, Stephanie Gross and Kaitlin Holden; Meghan Ingerick, April Miller, Staci Woytash and Susan Yang; and Carlyn Robby, Nicole Stuver, Kelly O'Keefe and Jenny Chiang.

The 200 freestyle had Fairport's Emily Gardner and Carrie Ostrom placing in the top 10 finishers out of 28 swimmers with times of 1:59.96 and 2:03.83. Fairport also swam senior Morgan Reisch and sophomore Katelin Webster.

Erin McGraw led Fairport in the 200 individual medley with a close second place finish (2:07.25) while teammates Lauren Dufault (2:11.52) and Jenna Wood (2:12.65) also finished with strong races allowing Fairport to place three swimmers in the top ten out of 26 swimmers. Junior Staci Woytash also swam the 200 I.M.

Devina Tyagi placed third for Fairport in the 50 free with a time of 25.43. Teammates, Andrea Hageman, Tiffany Chiang and Meghan Ingerick also had strong finishes in the 50 free.

Stephanie Gross, Staci Woytash, Esther Shin and Carlyn Robby all placed in the top 20 finishers in the 100 butterfly adding to the Fairport score at the 14th annual Empire Invitational. Devina Tyagi and Morgan Reisch placed in the top 10 in the next event, the 100 freestyle. Tiffany Chiang and Kaitlin Holden added to the scoring with finishes in the top 20.

Fairport's depth continued to add points in the 500 free. Erin McGraw, Emily Gardner and Carrie Ostrom all contributed with finishes of third, fifth and eighth in the top 10 swimmers. Sophomore Katelin Webster also finished in the top 15.

The 200 free relay had two Fairport relays in the top 10 and two more in the top 20 finishers. Fairport relays were Morgan Reisch, Katelin Webster, Emily Gardner and Carrie Ostrom (seventh); Ester Shin, Kaitlin Holden, Meghan Ingerick and Tiffany Chiang (10th); April Miller, Nicole Stuver, Brenna O'Neill and Jenny Chiang (12th); and Carlyn Robby, Susan Yang, Stephanie Gross and Kelly O'Keefe (16th).

Lauren Dufault led Fairport to a fourth place finish in the 100 back. Teammates Meghan Ingerick, Brenna O'Neill and Kaitlin Holden all finished in the top twenty finishers. Jenna Wood led Fairport in fourth place in the 100 breast. Andrea Hageman, Esther Shin and April Miller finished eighth, 13th and 14th respectively.

Fairport ended the last event of the afternoon, the 400 freestyle relay as it did the week prior with a strong victory over rival Pittsford. The Fairport relay of Lauren Dufault, Devina Tyagi, Jenna Wood and Erin McGraw finished with a time of 3:37.36. Fairport's second relay of Emily Gardner, Carrie Ostrom, Katelin Webster and Morgan Reisch finished in 10th place.

Fairport's two other relays - Tiffany Chiang, Staci Woytash, Andrea Hageman and Esther Shin and Stephanie Gross, Susan Yang, Nicole Stuver and April Miller both finished in the top 15 out of 26 relays.

Fairport finished with a team total of 1,437 points for the two day invitational and had an opportunity to view competition before the New York State High School championships later this fall.
