It was the last meet of the season.
It was senior night, the last time five boys would wear Fairport gear in a
regular season meet.
The stands at the Fairport pool were packed with supporters and the teams
were ready for annual showdown between two of the areas best swimming
programs. The heavily favored Panthers from Pittsford set the tone for the
meet by starting fast and winning the 200 medley relay in 1:42.16 with the
Red Raiders team of Peter Koenig, Jake Fisher, Dylan Scheemaker and Aram
Salehi taking second in 1:43.87. Pittsford followed with a 1 - 2 finish in
the 200 freestyle with Nathan French swimming a winning time of 1:48.69.
Fairport's Jim Beaudry picked up a third place finish.
Jake Fisher was one of only two first place winners for Fairport when he
swam a fast 2:02.93 in the 200 individual medley. In the 50 freestyle,
Fairport's Salehi (23:44) and Scheemaker (24:36) finished second and third
to keep pace with Pittsford's 1 - 4 finish.
In one-meter diving, Raider Pat Dineen battled Panther Sean Hingel for first
place, but the Pittsford diver prevailed 195.05 to 192.85.
Then in the 100 butterfly the Panthers showed why they have gone undefeated
for more than three years as they swam to a 1 - 2 finish with the winning
time of 57:10. A good swim of 57.71 by Koenig captured third in the event
for the Raiders.
Fairport's Beaudry touched the wall in 51:26 in the 100 freestyle, but it
was a fraction of a second behind Pittsford's first place Andrew Kuter
(51:11).
In the 500 freestyle, the crowd was treated to a remarkable swim by
Pittsford's Sean McManus covering the distance in 4:46.37. His swim was more
than 13 seconds faster than the state qualifying time. Fairport senior Jerry
Woytash swam to a third place finish in the same event.
The Raiders' 200 free relay team of Salehi, Scheemaker, Fisher and Beaudry
swam a good time of 1:33.70, and earned a second place finish. Then Fairport
sophomore, Peter Koenig, temporarily halted Pittsford's dominance by
swimming a great 100 backstroke in a winning (and state qualifying) time of
56.88.
In the next event, the 100 breast, Red Raider, Chris Razavi, swam 1:04.37 to
take second place and teammate Connor Harrington finished fourth. Fairport
ended the meet with the team of Salehi, Beaudry, Fisher and Koenig swimming
to a second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. The final score favored
Pittsford 119 - 67.
