Thursday, Jan. 12, Webster's combined team from Schroeder and Thomas traveled to Fairport convinced they could defeat Fairport's varsity swimmers for the first time in school history.

As the teams faced each other at opposite ends of the pool you could tell by the noise level that this was not just another meet. The coaches and spectators said it felt like a Pittsford or Penfield meet. And, like for many of those clashes, the Red Raiders were up for the challenge.

Fairport's 200 medley relay teams started the meet by taking first and second place. Jerry Woytash, Chris Razavi, Dylan Scheemaker and Aram Salehi recorded a time of 1:47.02 followed by the time of 1:47.51 turned in by Peter Koenig, Jake Fisher, Jon Steffan and George Wasickanin. Webster quickly turned the tables on Fairport in the 200 freestyle, sweeping first, second and third with a winning time of 1:55.34. Fairport answered with Fisher and Razavi swimming the Raiders back into the lead with first and second place finishes in the 200 individual medley with a winning time by Fisher of 2:05.67.

Then sprinters Jim Beaudry (23.26) and Salehi (23.51) turned in fast times in the 50 freestyle to take another first and second for the Raiders, giving Fairport a 36 - 26 advantage.

Next, the teams and supporters turned their attention to the diving well for a showdown between two of the better squads in the section. Coach Dave Salmon's divers delivered strong performances. Both Pat Dineen and Eric Hallimen beat their personal best by 20 points to capture first and second. Dineen recorded a score of 231.70 and Hallimen 206.50 with both boys landing six solid dives.

Back in the pool, Webster's Zack Wahl touched the wall in 58:56 just ahead of Fairport's Koenig and Scheemaker to win the 100 butterfly. Then Beaudry and Salehi swam to a first and second place in the 100 freestyle with Beaudry finishing in 51:26.

Webster was able to cut into Fairport's lead by placing first and second in the 500 freestyle, but the Raider's 200 free relay team of Salehi, Scheemaker, Fisher and Beaudry swam 1:33.63 to secure a crucial first place in an exciting race.

The stroke swimmers for Fairport dominated the next two events with Koenig posting 58.01 in the 100 back and Fisher covering the 100 breast in 1:02.61.

The final score of 107-79 was the result of a total team effort with contributions from the entire roster including underclassmen, Conner Harrington (200 relay and 100 breast), Kyle Mihaljevic (100 breast) and Brendan McLaughlin (200 free and 200 relay) and senior Dietrich Pate (200 and 400 relay).

This was Fairport's best performance of the season and should build their confidence as they prepare for a meeting with Pittsford on Jan. 31 at the Fairport pool.
