Penfield swimmers in rare win vs. Fairport

Jonathan Jones won four events, including a pool record in the 200-yard freestyle, as Penfield defeated Fairport 102-84 in Monroe County swimming Thursday.

This is just the second time in 30 years that the Patriots have defeated Fairport (2-1) in a guys swimming meet, according to Penfield coach Rick Schmitt.

Jones finished the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 46.02 seconds. He also won the 100 freestyle (49.25) and was on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams for Penfield (3-0).

"Big meet swimmers rise to the occasion," Schmitt said. "They did that and swam very well."

Ben Monti won the 50 freestyle (22.43), 100 backstroke (56.98) and was on each winning relay team.

Penfield never trailed, winning 10 of 12 events. The closest Fairport got was within eight points after diving competition.

"We had a game plan to keep going one event at a time and not looking at the score," Schmitt added.
