2 relays capture state championships

     

(November 20, 2005) — BUFFALO — Fairport High School girls varsity swimming and diving team sent six swimmers and three divers to compete at the NYSPHSAA State Meet, held Nov 18 and 19 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.

Swimming coach Mike Kennedy and diving coach Dave Salmon accompanied the girls. This prestigious event was host to an amazing group of young women with huge talent.

Junior Erin McGraw started the magic by being crowned champion in the 200 freestyle with an automatic All-American time of 1:51.36.

Junior Lauren Dufault and sophomore Emily Gardner (first-time state qualifier) competed in the 200 individual medley. Dufault received the eighth place medal with a time of 2:10.87 and Gardner placed 45th with 2:18.74.

Sophomore Devina Tyagi completed in the 50 free sprint, placing 45th with a time of 25:49.

The diving competition started with 53 divers. After four cuts and 11 dives, all of Fairport High School divers made the finals. Freshman Jenny Chiang finished her amazing inaugural season with third place and a score of 466.95. Seniors Becky Bersani and Gretchen Schroeder finished their outstanding high school careers with eighth and 11th places, respectively, with scores of 448.05 and 439.35.

Back to the pool and another champion. McGraw swam a winning automatic All-American time in the 100 fly, with a time of 56:54. Freshman and first-time state competitor Jenna Wood also swam the 100 fly, finishing 35th with a time of 1:01.49.

After a few minutes rest it was time for the 200 free relay finals. McGraw, Dufault, Tyagi and Wood won the race with an automatic All-American time of 1:37.85.

Next, Tyagi swam a 1:03.16 in the 100 back, which earned her 42nd place.

Wood and sophomore Andrea Hageman competed in the 100 breast. Wood finished seventh with a time of 1:08.54 and Hageman finished 31st with a time of 1:09.98.

The final event for Fairport was the 400 free relay. The team of McGraw, Dufault, Tyagi and Wood had an automatic All-American time of 3:33.69, edging out Ithaca High school for another first place finish for Fairport.

The nine competitors from Fairport High School earned enough points to place second in the NYSPHSAA Large School Competition. In addition, Fairport competitors received some individual honors at the state meet. Bersani received the award for "Good Sport " for Section 5. Schroeder and Bersani were both award Scholar Athlete representatives from Section 5.
