Fairport Swimmers Compete at NY State Meet

Jeff Wood earns two state titles

March 15, 2005 - The Fairport High School swim team sent six student athletes to the New York State Championship meet in Uniondale on Long Island March 4th and 5th.

In the preliminaries of the 200 medley relay, Aram Salehi swam the freestyle leg for the Red Raiders, helping them earn a spot in the final heat the next day. In finals, Jeff Wood, Jake Fisher, Hans Feng, and Jeff Kaemmerlen appeared to have won the event by the tiniest of margins, 0.04 seconds, in an All American time of 1:37.74. However, their fantastic effort was negated as they were disqualified several minutes later. In total, 5 of the top 9 teams were disqualified in this event. This would have been Fairport's 4th consecutive state title in this event, an amazing feat involving 9 different swimmers over 4 years.

The Red Raiders' fortunes improved noticeably in the next event with Wood earning the state title in a very tightly contested 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:41.57, beating Brian Possee of Pittsford by 0.10 seconds. Later in the meet he also defended his title in the 100 backstroke, claiming victory in a time of 50.68 seconds. Wood was the only double winner at the meet and for these two fine swims earned Swimmer of the Meet honors. Over his career at Fairport, Wood won eight state titles.

Kaemmerlen placed 20th in the 50 yard freestyle and also swam in the 100 freestyle. Feng competed in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Fisher placed 17th in the 100 breaststroke and also swam the 200 yard individual medley.

The Red Raiders closed the meet with a solid swim and 5th place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay. Jim Beaudry, Wood, Kaemmerlen, and Feng swam an All-American consideration time of 3:15.89. After the meet, Fairport Coach Mike Kennedy said "This meet closed out a great season for Fairport swimming. Jeff Wood showed all year he is probably one of the three best swimmers ever in Section 5. And I'm going to miss the two seniors (Wood and Kaemmerlen) who led this group at this meet, but I am proud of the entire team and am looking forward to next year."
