Fairport relays win state titles

November 21, 2004 - The Fairport girls swimming team made sure this trip to Long Island was worth the six-hour bus ride. Both the 200- and the 400-yard freestyle relay teams captured first place at the New York State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Nassau Aquatics Center Saturday.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Erin McGraw, Lauren Dufault, Devina Tyagi and Marlys Fuqua took first place with a time of 1:38.96.

"It feels really good right now," said Fuqua, a senior who anchored both of the winning relays. "I was on the last leg of the relay, and Erin McGraw told me this is the last race of our high school careers and that we should give it all you've got. All of our hard work paid off and it was a great way to close out my career."

Three events later the foursome was at it again, this time capturing the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:36.10.

"After the first title, being in first, we knew we wanted to be on top again," McGraw said. "There is no other feeling, especially winning two times."

Section V swimmers fared well, winning first place with 527 points. Section XI was second with 481, followed by Section I with 424.

"The key to winning was our divers," Section V swimming coordinator Scott Fake said. "Every single diver we had moved up a spot from the preliminaries to the finals, and the entire second half of the meet, all of our swimmers scored points and continued to move up to help out the section."

Section V captured the state championship for the 14th time in the past 17 years.
