October 26, 2004

The She-Sharks honored their seniors before the meet.

On Tuesday, Oct. 26, the Fairport girls swim team hosted Brockport in their final regular season meet of the year.

This was an evening set aside to commemorate the six senior athletes and all that they have brought to the team in their time as She-Sharks.

After first recognizing Brockport's seniors, Suzanne Flynn, Kendra Hogg, Jen Kaminska, Steph Yorio, and captains Marlys Fuqua and Clare Ostrom were introduced and honored by their team, coaches, family and school.

In time honored tradition, each girl stood on a starting block in their warm-ups for a moment then simultaneously jumped into the pool and swam the 25 yards to the other end.

The She-Sharks knew that this was going to be one of their most difficult meets of the year. Brockport came into the meet with an 8-1 record to Fairport's 9-1 record.

Devina Tyagi, Andrea Hageman, Clare Ostrom and Heather Moore started out the meet in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:58.19 followed by the team of Carly Callan, Lindsey Burris, Susan Yang and Tiffany Chiang in 2:11.04.

The 200 free saw strong swims by Hogg with 2:03.68, Morgan Reisch in 2:09.72 and Flynn touching in 2:11.04. Lauren Dufault was tested in the 200 individual medley and posted a best time of 2:12.53 while Carrie Ostrom and Staci Woytash fared well with solid times of 2:27.52 and 2:28.11.

Tyagi came away from the 50 free in a swift 26.07 while Yorio and Kaminska hit the wall in good time with 27.98 and 29.47, respectively.

Gretchen Schroeder, Becky Bersani, and Becca Kraft again dominated the diving well. These aquatic acrobats used this last meet before sectionals to hone their performances and it paid off in the team scoring.

Erin McGraw continued her season long domination in the 100 fly with a winning time of 59.92 followed by Clare Ostrom with a best time of 1:06.99 and Woytash in 1:09.10.

The 100 free saw a very tight grouping with Tyagi hitting the wall in 58.19, Reisch in 58.41 and Emily Gardner ending with 58.97. In the 500 free, Fuqua led Fairport with a 5:17.48 chased by Dufault in 5:21.19 and followed by Hogg in 5:28.22.

McGraw, Dufault, Clare Ostrom and Fuqua teamed up to turn in a solid time of 1:43.00 in the 200 free relay while Carrie Ostrom, Burris, Woytash and Steph Gross battled to a time of 1:57.13.

McGraw found herself setting another pool record this year at Fairport, touching the wall in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.40 while sound performances by Moore in 1:07.62 and Gardner with 1:09.36 added to the She-Sharks point total.

Hageman found herself battling in the 100 breast finishing in 1:10.31 while Burris touched in 1:16.23 followed closely by Carrie Ostrom in 1:17.46.

The culminating event of the evening, the 400 free relay proved to be one of the most exciting of the meet. The team of Hogg, Reisch, Fuqua and Clare Ostrom (3:51.90) were barely out-touched by Brockport while the teams of Yorio, Flynn, Moore and Gardner garnered much needed points touching in 4:02.24 and the team of Gross, Yang, Callan and Kaminska adding to Fairport's score with a time of 4:13.50 giving Fairport the win over Brockport 98-88.
