The She Sharks post 28 best times in the Mendon pool.

Thursday, Oct. 14, found the Fairport She-Sharks traveling to face off against Pittsford.

This was a match between two undefeated teams with a long history of vying for the top spot in Section 5 swimming. As always, the stands were filled to capacity at Mendon with fans cheering wildly and members of the guys team raucously showing their support for the girls. Everyone was keyed up for this show down.

Starting out the meet in the 200 medley relay the team of Devina Tyagi, Andrea Hageman, Clare Ostrom and Lauren Dufault were out-touched by a strong Pittsford team, posting a second place time of 1:56.14. The team of Carly Callan, Carrie Ostrom, Steph Gross and Susan Yang swam well with a time of 2:04.94 followed closely by the team of Heather Moore, Lindsey Burris, Steph Yorio and Tiffany Chiang in 2:05.10.

The 200 free found Marlys Fuqua in second with 1:57.52 and teammates Kendra Hogg (2:06.29) and Emily Gardner (2:07.28) adding their points to the Fairport board. The 200 IM saw Dufault taking first with a fast time of 2:12.66 and sisters Clare Ostrom and Carrie Ostrom dueling with their Pittsford counterparts to finish in 2:22.47 and 2:25.86, respectively.

Erin McGraw held off a strong Pittsford challenge to win the 50 free in 24.62 while Tyagi posted a 26.32 and Morgan Reisch swam a 26.62.

The Fairport divers faced one of their strongest challengers this season. Both teams saw dives that held increased degrees of difficultly over last year giving spectators a dazzling display of grace and athleticism. In a closely scored showdown the She Sharks swept second, third and fourth places.

McGraw became Fairport's first double winner by lowering her recently set record in the 100 fly to a time of 57.62. Gross touched in a time of 1:07.11 and Yorio followed up with a 1:09.89. Dufault held off a strong challenge in the 100 free to become Fairport's second double winner of the meet by touching in a time of 54.95. Reisch and Moore had steady swims of 58.01 and 1:00.25.

In the longest event of the evening, the 500 free, Fuqua touched in second place with a time of 5:15.15. Hogg swam a solid race in 5:34.43 followed by Gardner in 5:45.28.

The 200 free relay proved to be an exciting battle. The team of McGraw, Dufault, Tyagi and Fuqua came from behind barely being out-touched by Pittsford's top relay (1:41.00 versus 1:41.36). Reisch, Hageman, Yorio and Cl Ostrom teamed up for a time of 1:47.443 while Sarah Lakehal-Ayat, Callan, Chiang and Gross posted a time of 1:54.45.

The 100 back saw the She-Sharks putting up close times with Moore touching in 1:08.19, Tyagi in 1:08.89 and Staci Woytosh in 1:09.32. Freshman Hageman stunned Pittsford by winning the 100 breast in 1:10.18 while sister's Clare and Carrie Ostrom again drove each other on to times of 1:14.99 and 1:16.06.

The crowd became boisterous for the final event of the evening, the 400 free relay. Fairport's McGraw, Reisch, Gardner and Fuqua were closing in on Pittsford but ran out of pool and finished in second place with a time of 3:44.87. The team of Hogg, Yorio, Moore and Carrie Ostrom finished strongly with a 4:03.01 followed by steady swims by Lakehal-Ayat, Chiang, Yang and Woytosh in 4:14.10.

Even though Fairport posted 28 personal best times in this show down, Pittsford ended up topping the She-Sharks this year.

Fairport's next home meet will be Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 4:30 p.m. versus Brockport.
