Red Raider swimmers finish season with win

Strong team effort includes seven individual winners, two top state times, and a pool record.

The Fairport swimming and diving team ended its regular season with a home meet vs. Webster. The meet opened with a salute to the five graduating Red Raider seniors - Adam Craghead, Cyrus Salehi, and Reed Smith, and co-captains Pete Letteney and Matt McGraw.

Coach Mike Kennedy praised his seniors for their hard work, leadership, and dedication to the sport. He then lined up four of the seniors in the 200 yard medley relay to open the meet and Letteney, Smith, Craghead, and Salehi won easily in 1:51.69, ahead of Aram Salehi, Chris Razavi, Alex Hensel and George Wasickanin who placed third.

The 200 free was a marquee event with Jeff Wood winning in 1:44.51, the top time in New York state this year, Jon Roberts in second in 1:46.11, and McGraw third in 1:52.50.

Next, Fairport's three swimmers in the 200 individual medley all recorded best times, Aram Salehi stroking to first in 2:18.53, Nick Mihaljevic second in 2:19.68, and Wasickanin fifth in 2:34.21. C. Salehi won the sprint 50 free in 23.14 edging Letteney in 24.36, good for second place, and Tim Jacobs in fourth in 25.16.

Diver Pat Dineen closed his first varsity season strongly with a win, edging teammate Eric Hallimen with scores of 135.65 and 134.10, respectively. C. Salehi then won his second event of the meet, the 100 butterfly, in 1:00.53. Craghead placed second, and A. Salehi fourth.

Jeff Kaemmerlen swam away from the field in the 100 free to win in 50.85. Hans Feng placed second and Mihaljevic was fifth. Hensel carried the weight for Fairport in the distance event, the 500 free, and came away with the win. Wasickanin placed fifth. McGraw, Kaemmerlen, Roberts, and A. Salehi added another Red Raider win in the 200 free relay in 1:34.25.

Wood earned his second New York state top standard of the day with a 53.42 second win in the 100 back. Razavi and Feng finished 3-4.

In the 100 breast stroke Roberts broke a 15-year-old Fairport pool record with a 59.06 second swim. Smith and Jacobs made it a 1-2-3 sweep with personal best times of 1:10.89 and 1:12.74, respectively.

Hensel, Wasickanin, Razavi, and Feng were narrowly touched out in the 400 free relay, gaining a second place finish. Final score was Fairport 93, Webster 81. Fairport's regular season record was 9-2.

Next is the Section 5 Championships on Feb 12 and 14.
