Swimmers Sink Newburgh

    January 17, 2004

Fairport, NY - Four days after losing to Pittsford, Fairport faced another tough test by hosting Newburgh Free Academy, consistently the best team from Section 9 and a team Fairport has competed against for a number of years. Coach Kennedy commented that he thinks it is a good experience for the team to host a top state team from outside Section 5.

The 200 medley relay foursome of Jeff Kaemmerlen, Nick Mihaljevic, Jon Roberts, and George Wasickanin placed first, Pete Letteney, Hans Feng, Adam Craghead, and Arem Salehi added key points in third, and Alex Hensel, Chris Razavi, Nate Morales, and Reed Smith were fifth.

Jeff Wood won the 200 free in a very fast 1:46.96, Matt McGraw third in 1:51.79 and Tim Jacobs fifth in 1:59.67. Kaemmerlen was narrowly edged in the 200 individual medley for second place, Feng following in third and A. Salehi in fifth.

The 50 free was a 1-3-5 Red Raider finish by Cyrus Salehi, Matt McGraw, and Craghead.

Divers Pat Dineen and Eric Hallimen placed third and fifth. At this point Fairport's lead was a narrow 42-36.

Roberts got things moving again with a 52 flat 100 butterfly, tying the Fairport pool record. Feng and Smith placed third and sixth. C. Salehi notched second in the 100 free, followed by Letteney and A. Salehi, but now the Red Raider lead was a too-close-for-comfort two points.

Wood won the 500 free in a very fast 4:52.77, Woytash fourth in 5:19.99 and Mihaljevic sixth. The Red Raiders extended their lead slightly by hanging on to win a fast 200 free relay by 0.14 seconds, C. Salehi, Feng, Jacobs, and Wood providing the needed points.

A 1-3-4 100 back finish by Kaemmerlen, Letteney, and Razavi added to the cushion, and Roberts, Mihaljevic, and Smith placing 1-2-5 in the 100 breast put Fairport over the top with one event left.

In the final event, the 400 free relay, C. Salehi, Wood, Kaemmerlen, and Roberts were second, A. Salehi, Jacobs, Woytash, and Letteney placed third, and Wasickanin, Hensel, Morales, and Razavi finished fifth.

The final score was 100-86 in Fairport's favor. The Red Raider record is now 6-2. After the meet, the Fairport Swimming and Diving Booster Club hosted a lunch for their Newburgh guests.
