The Fairport swimming and diving team met two perennial powerhouse rivals this past week, Pittsford and Newburgh.

In 2003, Pittsford was co-state champs with Fairport, and Newburgh was the third best team.

In the meet at Pittsford on Tuesday, the excitement started with the Red Raiders edging the Panther foursome in the 200 yard medley relay in an intense race. Jeff Wood, Jon Roberts, Matt McGraw, and Cyrus Salehi finished in 1:37.49, a Pittsford pool record, automatic All-American time, and top New York state time this season. Pete Letteney, Nick Mihaljevic, Hans Feng, and Tim Jacobs placed fourth, and Chris Razavi, Reed Smith, Alex Hensel, and Nate Morales placed sixth.

Jeff Kaemmerlen claimed second in the 200 free in a fast 1:50.21, followed by Aram Salehi in 1:59.56 and Jerry Woytash in 2:01.13.

Roberts won the individual medley in 1:58.36, the top time in the state so far this season. Razavi and Jacobs swam personal best times of 2:19.56 and 2:20.44, respectively. Wood burned to a second place finish in the 50 free in a fast 22.60 seconds, Cyrus Salehi third in 23.10 and Adam Craghead sixth in 24.96. At this point the meet was close with Pittsford holding a 35-27 lead.

Red Raider divers Eric Hallimen and Pat Dineen stepped up to the higher level of intensity of this meet with their best performances of the season. Hallimen placed third with 139 points and Dineen was fourth with 134.9.

Roberts then blazed to his second win of the meet in the 100 butterfly with a pool record 51.44, again tops in the state this year. Feng and Craghead were third and sixth.

McGraw finished second in the 100 free with a solid 50.10 second swim, Cyrus Salehi fourth in 50.83 and Letteney fifth in 53.85.

The 500 free distance event produced more solid Red Raider swims with Kaemmerlen second in 5:05.34, Woytash fourth in 5:21.65, and Aram Salehi sixth in 5:28.09.

Fairport snagged its second relay win of the meet with Roberts, Cyrus Salehi, Feng, and Kaemmerlen clocking a quick 1:31.09. Craghead, Aram Salehi, George Wasickanin, and Jacobs were fourth and Morales, Hensel, Woytash, and Smith fifth.

More Red Raider points went up on the board in the 100 back with Wood and McGraw finishing 1-2. Wood's time of 53.54 is another No. 1 NY state time, McGraw swam a fast 56.55, and Letteney finished in 1:01.41.

In the 100 breast Feng placed third in 1:07.14, Mihaljevic fourth in 1:07.98, and Razavi sixth in 1:11.06.

The meet finished with Fairport placing 2-4-5 in the 400 free relay. A. Salehi, Kaemmerlen, McGraw, and Letteney placed second, Jacobs, Woytash, Wasickanin, and Mihaljevic were fourth, and Morales, Hensel, Razavi, and Reed finished fifth. Pittsford won by a 105-81 score.

Coach Mike Kennedy said after the meet "I was proud of our team for their sportsmanship during the competition and the fact that our athletes fought hard all the way to the last event. " Fairport produced an excellent total of 25 personal best times for the meet.
