Fairport 7, Penfield 109
December 4, 2003
The Fairport varsity swim team traveled to Penfield on Dec. 4, to
open their season against a fired-up Patriots squad. Penfield had not beaten
the Red Raiders since 1975, but knew that with their strongest lineup in
many years that they had a chance to finally turn the tables on Fairport.
Fairport was also swimming without the services of Section 5 champion and
All-American Jeff Wood who is out for several weeks with an injury.
The 200 medley relay has been dominated by Fairport over the past few years
and this year looks promising as the team of Jeff Kaemmerlen, Jon Roberts,
Matt McGraw, and Cyrus Salehi opened the season with a solid win in a time
of 1:39.86. Fairport's time is a new Penfield pool record and an
All-American consideration time. Chris Razavi, Nick Mihaljevic, Adam
Craghead, and Tim Jacobs finished fourth while George Wasickanin, Reed
Smith, Alex Hensel, and Nate Morales finished in the sixth spot.
The 200 free saw Penfield sweep the first and second spots, but McGraw, Hans
Feng, and Jerry Woytash kept the Raiders close by finishing in the third,
fourth, and fifth spots. Penfield was then able to open up a comfortable
lead with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 individual medley. Razavi and Mihaljevic
finished fourth and fifth for the Raiders in the 200 IM scoring important
team points.
Penfield kept things rolling with a 1-2 finish in the 50 free with Cyrus
Salehi, Pete Letteney and Adam Craghead coming in third, fourth, and sixth
for Fairport. Once again, Penfield swept the Raiders with a 1-2 finish in
diving. Eric Hallimen and Pat Dineen performed well for Fairport and
finished in third and fifth place. At the half way point Penfield had
doubled Fairport's score holding a 52-26 advantage.
The 100 fly saw Fairport snap Penfield's winning streak with Roberts, Feng,
and Hensel finishing in first, fourth, and sixth. Roberts' time of 51.71 is
a new pool record and an All American consideration time. Cyrus Salehi,
Letteney, and Aram Salehi then posted a 2-4-5 finish in the 100 free
followed by a 2-4-5 finish by McGraw, Woytash, and Tim Jacobs in the 500
free.
The 200 free relay saw the team of Letteney, Feng, Aram Salehi, and McGraw
finish second with Morales, Smith, Wasickanin, and Woytash in fourth.
Penfield was then able to lock up the meet with a win in the 100 back.
Fairport's Kaemmerlen, Craghead, and Hensel touched in the second, fifth,
and sixth spots.
Roberts then provided one of the highlights of the day for the Raiders with
his third pool record finishing first in the 100 breast with a time of
58.24. His time also makes him an automatic All-American in the event for
this season. Mihaljevic and Razavi helped the Raiders outscore Penfield with
their third and fifth place finishes.
Fairport finished strong in the 400 free relay with Cyrus Salehi, Feng,
Roberts, and Kaemmerlen touching first followed by Jacobs, Aram Salehi,
Woytash, and Letteney in third and Smith, Morales, Wasickanin, and Razavi in
fifth. Although they dropped the meet to Penfield by the score of 109-77,
the Fairport squad posted 31 personal best times and is looking forward to a
rematch with the Patriots at the Section 5 meet later this year.
