Varsity She-Sharks Defeat Penfield

Fairport, NY - The Fairport varsity She-Sharks claimed victory over Penfield at the final home meet of the season.

The meet began with the traditional salute to senior athletes on both teams. Honored by Fairport Athletic Director James Zumbo, coaches, teammates and parents for their contributions to Fairport varsity swimming were the following seniors: Lauren Fuqua, Laura Kolb and co- captains Carrie Kroll, Erin Legg and Emily Vaughan.

Opening the meet, the 200 medley team of Heather Moore, Clare Ostrom, Marlys Fuqua and Jen Kaminska placed first for Fairport. They were quickly followed by teammates E. Legg, S. Yorio, M. Roberts and M. Reisch. The team of S. Lakehal-Ayat, L. Burris, K. Kenny and C. Callan placed third for Fairport.

Marlys Fuqua and Erin McGraw battled for first place in the 200 free, with Fuqua just touching prior to McGraw. This 1-2 placement added to Fairport's lead and K. Hogg touched third in the event.

In the 200 IM, Suzanne Flynn placed first for Fairport and captured a best time. She was followed by teammate Kaminska placing second and S. Yang, who placed third. Fairport continued to dominate the 50 free with Lauren Dufault placing first. Dufault earned a best time. Heather Moore touched second for Fairport and E. Vaughan placed third.

The Fairport varsity divers showed their expertise. Placing first for Fairport was Gretchen Schroeder with a score of 173 points. She was closely followed by teammate L. Fuqua, who placed second, and B. Kraft who placed third.

After the diving competition, the attention returned poolside. E. Legg captured first place for Fairport in the 100 fly. Quickly following her was teammate Carrie Kroll. Kroll placed second and earned a best time. Morgan Reisch placed third for Fairport. In the 100 free event, S. Flynn touched first for Fairport and earned a best time. T. Chiang placed fifth overall in the event and Vaughan placed sixth. The 500 free saw Dufault capture first place and a best time. Ostrom finished fourth overall and Yorio placed sixth overall.

For the 200 free relays, the team of Hogg, Ostrom, Dufault and Fuqua placed first for Fairport. Kaminska, Reisch, Yorio and Chang placed second for Fairport and Callan, Alderman, Lakehal-Ayat and C. Robboy placed third for the She-Sharks. Fairport had a 1-2 finish in the 100 back, as E. Legg touched first, followed by H. Moore. Legg earned a best time. L. Kolb finished third for Fairport.

In an exciting 100 breast, Melanie Roberts shattered the varsity Fairport pool record with a winning time of 1:07.18. L. Burris placed second and Kim Kenny placed third for Fairport.

In the final event, the 400 free relay, the team of E. McGraw, C. Ostrom, L. Dufault and M. Roberts placed first. Teammates Alderman, Yang, Lakehal-Ayat and Robby touched second. The all-senior team of Legg, Kroll, Kolb and Vaughan touched third. The meet was a tremendous finish for Fairport, who completed this season with a very impressive 10-1 record.

The varsity coaches are Mike Kennedy, Marci Callan (swimming) and Dave Salmon (diving). The Fairport J.V. swimming coach is Mike Fortner.
