September 05, 2003 The Fairport High School swim team was the 10th best team in the nation during the 2002-03 season, and the ninth best public high school team, according to the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA). All of the swimmers and performances that contribute to this terrific accomplishment are recognized as All American by NISCA. Sophomore Jon Roberts led the way for Fairport, being recognized as All-American in three individual events. He was ranked 10th in the nation in the 100 yard breast stroke with his 56.81 second swim which earned him the state high school title. He was also All-American in the 200 yard individual medley (1:52.55) and the 50 yard freestyle (21.41 seconds). Sophomore Jeff Wood also turned in three individual All-American performances. He was recognized in the 200 yard freestyle (1:42.44), the 500 yard freestyle (4:38.83), and the 100 yard backstroke (52.02 seconds). Relays have always been a source of team pride for the Red Raiders. Roberts and Wood joined with other teammates to earn All-American honors in two relays, both of which won the state high school championships this past spring. Fairport was ranked fifth in the nation in the 200 yard medley relay for their time of 1:35.06, which set a state high school record. The medley relay team was Jim Wood, Roberts, Jeff Wood, and Andy Amyot. Jim Wood and Amyot were both seniors, and Amyot was a team captain. The Red Raiders were ranked eighth in the nation in the 200 yard freestyle relay for their state record time of 1:25.80. That All-American relay team included Roberts, Jeff Wood, Cyrus Salehi, and Amyot. "In addition to the great individual performances by Jon and Jeff, the relays are most important because they help the student athletes recognize the importance of teamwork, and the importance of relying on each other to achieve these terrific levels of accomplishment," said Fairport head coach Mike Kennedy.
