Sharks beat Newburgh

    January 18, 2003

The day after their emotional win for the No. 1 ranking in New York State over Pittsford, the Fairport varsity swim team boarded a bus and traveled 300 miles to Newburgh for their traditional meet against this downstate powerhouse.

The Red Raiders got off to a fast start winning the 200 yard medley relay. Jeff Wood, Andy Amyot, Kurt Schwarz, and Cyrus Salehi swam to victory in 1:43.85, followed by Jim Wood, Jeff Kaemmerlen, Adam Craghead, and Hans Feng in third in 1:51.06, and Jerry Woytash, Chris Hamlin, Cuyler O'Brien, and Tim Jacobs in fourth in 2:00.18.

The 200 free is one of Newburgh's strengths and proved to be a fast race won by Fairport's Jon Roberts in 1:46.27. Matt McGraw placed fourth in 1:53.72, and Jeff Melvin was fifth in 2:04.07.

Jeff Wood then won the 200 individual medley in a very fast and close race, finishing with a time of 1:58.77. Schwarz placed fourth in 2:13.81, and Feng swam in 2:19.19. Both Wood's and Roberts' times are top five in New York State this year.

Amyot won the 50 free in a solid 22.70 seconds, ahead of Salehi in third in 24.02 and Letteney in 24.93.

Ryan McLaughlin won the diving, performing all six dives superbly and scoring a career high 278 points. Eric Hallimen also dove well, scoring 123 points.

Roberts won the 100 fly in a blistering 52.77 seconds. The Red Raiders showed their depth in this event with Amyot in 54.59 and McGraw in 57.93 seconds completing a 1-2-3 sweep. Salehi placed second in the 100 free in 52.15 seconds, Craghead third in 55.49 and O'Brien finishing in 57.71.

The 500 free was also a very tight race the entire way between Jim Wood and two of Newburgh's best swimmers, but Wood prevailed in a fast 4:58.44. Kaemmerlen placed fourth in 5:20.88, and Melvin was fifth in 5:39.92. Fairport again showed its depth in the 200 free relay with a 1-3-4 finish. Roberts, McGraw, Salehi, and Kaemmerlen won in 1:34.48, Schwarz, Feng, Melvin, and Craghead were third in 1:40.07, and Hamlin, Jacobs, Woytash, and McLaughlin fourth in 1:46.89.

The 100 back was the marquee event of the meet. Newburgh's Nat Moore, who set a pool record in this event at last year's meet at Fairport's pool, faced off against Red Raider Jeff Wood. The race was neck and neck but Wood used his superior underwater work to win in 52.17 to Moore's 52.38. This was a Newburgh pool record and the two fastest times in New York State this year. Jim Wood was third in 59.04, and Letteney was fifth in 1:03.40.

In the 100 breast Schwarz placed third in 1:13.95, O'Brien fourth in 1:15.22, and Hamlin fifth in 1:16.23.

Fairport finished the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, the quartet of Amyot, Roberts, McGraw, and Jeff Wood first in 3:23.53, Melvin, Feng, Kaemmerlen and Jim Wood fourth, and Jacobs, Letteney, Woytash, and O'Brien fifth.

The final score of the meet was Fairport 109, Newburgh 76.
