Fairport Beats Greece

January 16, 2003 - Fairport swimmers opened up the second half of their season with a decisive home win against Greece Athena/Odyssey.

Following the traditional heavy training period during the holiday break the Fairport team faced Greece somewhat tired, but intent on keeping their winning streak alive. Matt McGraw, Jim Wood, Andy Amyot, and Jon Roberts got things rolling with a win in the 200 medley relay followed by the teams of Jeff Kaemmerlen, Hans Feng, Jeff Melvin, and Cuyler O'Brien in third place and Chris Hamlin, Kurt Schwarz, Adam Craghead, and Tim Jacobs in fifth place.

In the 200 free, Jeff Wood posted one of the best times in the state this year in winning with a time of 1:44.87. Pete Letteney and Jerry Woytash finished for the Red Raiders in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Fairport then showed its strength in the 200 individual medley with Roberts, Jim Wood, and McGraw completing a 1-2-3 sweep.

Amyot led the way in the 50 free in first place with a time of 22.96 followed by Cyrus Salehi in fourth and Melvin in fifth. Ryan McLaughlin then captured a first in diving to give Fairport a comfortable 47-21 lead at the midpoint of the meet.

Amyot then returned for his second individual win of the afternoon with a solid time of 54.22 in the 100 fly. Feng and O'Brien helped Fairport outscore Greece in the 100 fly by finishing fourth and fifth. In the 100 free, Greece won its only event of the afternoon with Salehi finishing second, just 0.04 of a second behind the winner. Craghead added a fourth place finish for Fairport and Letteney finished in fifth.

In the 500 free Fairport's McGraw, Woytash, and Jacobs finished in first, third, and fourth to further extend the Raiders' lead.

Fairport's 200 free relay team of Kaemmerlen, Jeff Wood, Hamlin, and Salehi finished first followed by the team of Woytash, Letteney, Jacobs, and Melvin in third. The highlight of the meet was Jeff Wood's attempt to break the pool record in the 100 back. Wood finished in first with an excellent time of 52.87 just missing the pool record established last year by a swimmer from Newburgh Free Academy. Schwarz and O'Brien finished fifth and sixth in the 100 back for the Raiders. Fairport's 100 breast strokers then finished in first, third, and fifth, with Roberts leading the way in 59.96 followed by Jim Wood and Hans Feng.

The 400 free relay teams then locked up the victory with a 1-3-4 finish. In first place was the team of Hamlin, Jeff Wood, Melvin and Salehi followed by McGraw, Jim Wood, Jacobs and Kaemmerlen in third and O'Brien, Woytash, Letteney, and Feng in fourth. The final score was Fairport 105, Greece Athena/Odyssey 69.
