Swimmers Capture Spencerport Relays

December 19, 2002

Spencerport, NY - Fairport's state champion and All-American 200 medley relay team from the 2001-2002 season is back for another year and helped set the tone for the victorious Fairport swim team at the Spencerport Relays.

Jim Wood, Jon Roberts, Jeff Wood, and Andy Amyot got the Raiders off to a fast start winning the 200 medley relay with a great mid-season time of 1:39.49. Fairport's time broke both the pool record, established just a few weeks ago by Fairport, and the meet record previously held by Orchard Park.

The next event in the annual meet that features 10 relays and no individual swimming was the 800 freestyle relay. Fairport once again turned in a gold medal performance with Jerry Woytash, Cyrus Salehi, Jeff Kaemmerlen, and Matt McGraw finishing in 7:51.75. The race featured a strong anchor leg by McGraw, who swam his 200 freestyle split in 1:51.72.

Next up was the 200 butterfly relay where the team of Jim Wood, Cuyler O'Brien, Adam Craghead, and Jeff Melvin finished with a solid time of 1:48.61, good enough for a third place finish.

In the final event prior to the diving break, Fairport showed its traditional strength in the breast stroke with Vijay Parthasarathy, Hans Feng, Tim Jacobs, and Chris Hamlin finishing first with a time of 2:11.02.

With only two divers on the squad this year, Andy Amyot was asked to move from his normal role as a swimmer to help round out the three-person diving "relay". Amyot and the Fairport divers of Ryan McLaughlin and Eric Hallimen each performed well on their two dives and finished in third place overall.

Moving back into the pool, the Fairport team captured another gold in the 400 medley relay. The Raider team of Kaemmerlen, Kurt Schwarz, Melvin, and Pete Letteney turned in the winning time of 4:07.63. Next up was the 400 freestyle relay where the Fairport team of Feng, Craghead, O'Brien, and McGraw finished in third place with a time of 3:42.73.

Jim Wood, Hamlin, Schwarz, and Jeff Wood then turned in a fine performance getting Fairport back on the winning track with a time of 1:45.74 in the 200 backstroke relay.

Making it two wins in a row for the Raiders was the team of McGraw, Kaemmerlen, Roberts, and Amyot in the 400 individual medley relay with a time of 3:50.66.

In the final event of the day, the Fairport team of Parthasarathy, Letteney, Salehi, and Jacobs finished third in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.90.

Fairport finished with six first places and four third places in the 10 relay events and scored a total of 116 points, good enough for an overall first place finish over the five other teams from the Rochester area. This was the final meet for the Red Raiders in 2002 and the team will now start to prepare for several key meets coming up during the month of January.
