December 12, 2002 Fairport, NY - The Fairport High School varsity swim team opened its 2002-03 season at home against Churchville-Chili. The Red Raiders are led this year by captains Andy Amyot and Jeff Melvin, both seniors. Fairport graduated eight seniors from last year's team but returns a strong group intent on retaining their position as the No. 1 team in New York State. Fairport's varsity coaches are Mike Kennedy, Mike Fortner, and Dave Salmon. The opening event was the 200 yard medley relay. Jim Wood, Vijay Parthasarathy, Kurt Schwarz, and Pete Letteney won in 1:48.57, and Chris Hamlin, Hans Feng, Amyot, and Jeff Wood finished second in 1:50.29. Jerry Woytash, Tim Jacobs, Melvin, and Adam Craghead finished fourth. Matt McGraw led a Fairport sweep of the 200 freestyle, winning in a solid 1:52.89, with Jeff Kaemmerlen second in 1:56.08 and Cyrus Salehi third in 1:57.97. Next, Jeff Wood won the 200 individual medley with an impressive 1:59.97, followed by Amyot in second in 2:11.96 and Melvin fourth in 2:22.81. The 50 freestyle was won by Parthasarathy in 24.22 seconds, touching out Schwarz, who finished second in 24.41. Letteney was fourth in 25.35. In the diving, senior Ryan McLaughlin finished second with 197 points. Jim Wood continued Fairport's winning streak in the 100 butterfly with a 58.46 victory. Cuyler O'Brien placed second in 1:06.06, and Letteney fifth in 1:10.28. Jeff Wood won his second event with a 49.75 in the 100 free, followed by Kaemmerlen third in 53.33 and Craghead fourth in 56.54. Then Woytash won the 500 free in 5:29.97. Feng was third in 5:46.49, and Jacobs finished fourth in 5:48.52. In the 200 free relay, the foursome of Salehi, Parthasarathy, Schwarz, and Kaemmerlen won in 1:36.68. Craghead, O'Brien, Letteney, and Melvin placed second in 1:41.84. Then Jim Wood scored his second win with a fast 56.07 seconds in the 100 backstroke, edging McGraw, who placed second in 57.89. Hamlin completed the 1-2-3 sweep in 1:02.28. The 100 breast stroke was next and Amyot swam a solid 1:05.76 to win easily. Feng was second in 1:14.06, and Salehi fourth in 1:21.49. The Red Raiders closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Amyot, Woytash, Jeff Wood and McGraw placed first in 3:35.88, and O'Brien, Jacobs, Kaemmerlen, and Hamlin were second in 3:48.11. Final score: Fairport 105, Churchville-Chili 78.
