She Sharks compete at the Empire Invitational

Webster, NY - The Fairport She-Sharks competed in the Empire Invitational meet held at the Webster Aquatic Center on Saturday Oct. 12. Fairport was joined by the local teams of Webster Schroeder and Victor in this seven team meet. The other participating teams were East Aurora, Ithaca, Saratoga Springs and Shenendehowa.

This meet has a different format from the dual meets that the girls are used to in their high school season. All of the teams have an entry in each of the four heats swum for each event. In addition, the divers will perform 11 instead of six dives. Points are awarded for each place.

The meet began with the divers performing eight dives. Representing Fairport in diving were Becky Bersani, Becca Kraft and Jesse Webb. After the preliminary round, Bersani was sixth, Kraft 13th and Webb 14th.

The swimming began with the 200 medley relay. The team of Marlys Fuqua, Clare Ostrom, Erin Legg and Nicole DiBello placed fourth overall.

The other Fairport teams of Carly Callan, Lindsey Burris, Jen Alderman and Stephanie Yorio were 11th; Beth Kenney, Kim Kenney, Carrie Kroll And Carly Snyder were 20th and Sarah Lakehal-Ayat, Jenn Kaminska, Laura Kolb and Emily Vaughn were 25th.

Fuqua finished second in the 200 free with a time of 1:58.36. She was followed by Suzanne Flynn, 15th, Lakehal-Ayat 21st, and Kendra Hogg 22nd. Next up was the 200 individual medley. Legg was first with a time of 2:12.79. DiBello was eighth, Ostrom 13th and Kolb 26th. Fairport placed Kellie Kong 14th, Alderman 16th, Burris 24th and Carly Nichols 25th in the 50 Free.

With the swimmers resting, the divers went back to complete their final three dives. Webster's Erika Matheis won the diving competition. Fairport placed Bersani eighth, Kraft 12th and Webb 14th.

Legg won the 100 fly in a time of 59.90. Yorio, Kroll and Erin Eisenhardt followed with 18th, 23rd and 24th place finishes.

In the 100 free, Alderman placed 14th followed by Flynn in 16th, Snyder 20th and Vaughn 25th. Winning the 500 free distance event was Fuqua with a 5:14.80. Lakehal-Ayat, Hogg and Nichols finished in 14th, 15th and 18th respectively.

The 200 free relay was next. The team of Burris, Snyder, Yorio and Kong placed 10th. With Nichols, Callan, Flynn and B. Kenney 17th; Vaughn, K. Kenney, Hogg and Lakehal-Ayat 19th; and Kaminska, Eisenhardt, Kolb and Kroll 21st.

The 100 back was won by Meghan Reissig of Victor. Fairport had Callan in 16th, Kong 17th, B. Kenney 21st and Eisenhardt 25th. The final individual event of the day was the 100 breast. Ostrom placed eighth, DiBello 10th, Burris 11th and K. Kenney 19th.

The last event of the meet was the 400 free relay. The team of Legg, DiBello, Alderman and Fuqua placed fourth with a time of 3:49.22. Kong, Nichols, Flynn and Ostrom were 11th; Kolb, B. Kenney, Callan and Hogg 17th and Kroll, Eisenhardt, K. Kenney and Vaughn 22nd.

The Fairport She-Sharks placed fifth overall.
