March 2, 2002
Buffalo, NY - Fairport High School sent nine swimmers and
divers to the state championship meet on March 1 and 2 at
the Flickinger Center of Erie Community College in Buffalo.
The first day of the meet serves as championships of the
State Federation which includes public and parochial
schools, and also serves as preliminaries for the second day
which are the finals for the public high schools. Fairport
had at least one participant in every event, including all
three relays.
The diving championship is also held on the first day.
Senior Pete Crane, competing in his fifth state meet,
finished his excellent high school career placing third with
436.20 points, and junior Ryan McLaughlin finished eighth
with 390.95 points. Both earned All American consideration
for their point totals.
The federation finals were highlighted with two Fairport
relay victories. The Red Raiders started strong in the 200
yard medley relay, the team of Jim Wood, Jon Roberts, Jeff
Wood, and Andy Amyot winning easily in 1:36.79.
The 200 freestyle relay foursome of Roberts, Tim Stockton,
Pete Kaemmerlen, and Amyot also won a state federation title
in the winning time of 1:27.15.
During the preliminaries, the Red Raiders swam well
throughout the meet, with many swimmers earning places in
consolation finals or finals on Day 2 (reported below). Also
in the preliminaries, Kaemmerlen, a senior, swam the 200
free in 1:48.86 and the 100 free in 49.64. Junior Jim Wood
swam the 200 individual medley in 2:01.29. Stockton, also a
senior, swam the 50 free in 22.62 seconds and the 100 free
in 50.00.
Day 2 of the meet was the NY State Public High School
Championship finals. Fairport started again with Wood,
Roberts, Wood, and Amyot earning a clear victory in the 200
medley relay in 1:36.41, which qualifies as an All American
time.
Jeff Wood, a freshman, then came right back on very little
rest in the next event, the 200 free, and finished fifth in
1:45.33.
Next Roberts, also a freshman, finished fourth in the 200
individual medley in 1:55.08, earning All American
consideration. Amyot, a junior, finished eighth in the 50
free in 21.93 seconds.
Amyot then swam the 100 fly, finishing seventh in 53.06
seconds. In the 500 free Jeff Wood placed fifth in 4:42.46.
Next was the 200 free relay, made even more tense than usual
at the start with the disqualification of two other teams.
The Fairport quartet recovered smoothly and Roberts,
Stockton, Kaemmerlen, and Amyot won a close race as Amyot
overtook two other swimmers on a thrilling last leg to
finish in 1:26.97, earning the team All American
consideration.
In the consolation finals of the 100 back Matt McGraw, a
sophomore, finished 14th in 55.92 seconds, and Jim Wood
finished 11th in 54.47.
Roberts then earned a Red Raider individual event victory in
the 100 breast in 58.26 seconds, an All American
consideration time.
The quartet of Stockton, Wood, Wood, and Kaemmerlen finished
the meet with a sixth place finish in the 400 freestyle
relay in the time of 3:18.24.
Fairport was the highest scoring team by a wide margin with
201 points (top 16 places score points). This year's Red
Raiders blended strength, highlighted by Roberts, Amyot, and
Jeff Wood each reaching state finals in two individual
events, plus Crane's and McLaughlin's strong diving, and
depth as shown by their two firsts and a sixth in the
relays. Only one other team at the meet made finals in the
three relays.
The Red Raiders finished the season undefeated in dual
meets, won the Section 5 Class A Championships, and scored
more points than any other team at states to finish the
season defending their title as the No. 1 swimming and
diving team in NY State.
Coaches Mike Kennedy, Mike Fortner, and Dave Salmon were
successful leading the team again this year. Fairport will
miss the departing seniors, especially Crane, Kaemmerlen,
and Stockton who competed at the state meet, but with a
strong group of underclassmen, they are already looking
forward to next year.
