Spencerport Relays

December 20, 2001 - Every December the Fairport Red Raiders join swimmers from five other area high schools to swim in the Holiday Relays hosted by the Spencerport Rangers. This year, the other teams competing were Lockport, Livonia, Greece Arcadia / Olympia, and Churchville Chili.

The first event was the 200 medley relay. Joe Lakin, Vijay Parthasarathy, Nick Reisch, and Cyrus Salehi were narrowly edged out to a second place finish in 1:52.53.

In the next event, coach Mike Kennedy put forward a strong team to challenge the meet record set in 1982 by a Fairport team that included, among others, the coach himself. Jon Roberts, Tim Stockton, Pete Kaemmerlen, and Jeff Wood were up for the challenge, swimming in a very fast 7:24.86, but missed the record by less than two seconds.

Next, the team of Jeff Melvin, Reisch, Ian Phillips, and Tyler Obenauf won the 200 butterfly relay in 1:50.15.

The 200 breast stroke relay team of Parthasarathy, Doug Potvin, Carl Adair, and Roberts won in a time of 2:02.28.

In the diving "relay" each diver performs twice. The Red Raider trio of Pete Crane, Ryan McLaughlin, and Matt Phillips won easily, coming close to beating a 17-year old meet record.

The 400 medley relay team of Kurt Schwarz, Jeff Kaemmerlen, Matt McGraw, and Andy Amyot overcame a lead to win a close race in 4:00.37.

The next event was the 400 freestyle relay in which the Red Raider team of Corey Stark, Chris Hamlin, Adam Craghead, and Phillips swam in 3:40.16, narrowly missing a win.

The quartet of Jim Wood, McGraw, P. Kaemmerlen, and Jeff Wood won the 200 backstroke relay easily in 1:41.80, smashing the meet record by almost three seconds.

The final two events were also great swims for Fairport. The 400 individual medley relay (each swimmer does a 100 IM) was won easily by the team of J. Kaemmerlen, Potvin, Schwarz, and Amyot in 4:01.05. The 200 free relay team was Stockton, Adair, Stark, and Keith Schanck, all Fairport seniors, who challenged for the win to the end and finished a close second with a time of 1:38.27.

Overall the Fairport relay teams won seven of the relays, and placed second in the other three events, thus winning the meet.

But the real intent of the meet is to "showcase outstanding swimming" and for the swimmers to have some fun, both of which were accomplished. Fairport and the other five teams displayed lots of talent, showing promise for a strong performance by Section 5 swimmers at the state meet in March.
