November 10, 2001 Brockport, NY - Fairport won its fifth straight sectional swimming and diving crown at SUNY Brockport's pool on Saturday - it was the closest finish ever as Fairport edged Pittsford by only a half point. Fairport started off the meet with the 200 medley relay. The team of Marylas Fuqua, Erin Legg, Christy Breen, and Nicole DiBello placed third with a time of 1:55.00. Next up was the 200 freestyle - Breen and Fuqua swam an amazing race placing second and third with both earning a trip to the state meet with their times of 1:57.16 and 1:58.15, respectively. Stephanie Chan swam a personal best time placing 13th in the bonus heat. The very competitive 200 IM saw Jamie Adams place third in 2:14.48 ,just missing magic time for states by 14/100ths. DiBello was sixth in finals and Megan McGraw swam to an 18th place. The 50 free was an exciting race with the top four times separated by 6/100ths. Becky Potvin placed fourth in 24.87 earning a trip to states, and Jessica Blaha placed fifth with a best time of 25.22. Laurissa Prystaj won diving with a score of 445.75 (11 dives). She was also honored with the Division I Swimmer/Diver of the Year Award. After a short break and warm-up, the swimmers returned to action. The 100 butterfly saw Breen swim to a strong second place finish in 1:00.65 and Legg swim a season best time of 101.39 placing third. Katie Barbato placed 15th. The 100 freestyle was won by Potvin in 54.27 also a state qualifying time with Blaha earning fourth place points with a 54.97 This race proved critical as the Pittsford and Penfield swimmer tied for second place. The 500 freestyle distance race saw Adams and DiBello earning fourth and fifth place points and McGraw placing 17th. The 200 free relay was next and the strong Fairport team of Potvin, DiBello, Adams, and Blaha brought home the win with a season best time of 1:40.76 earning important first place points and a trip to the state swim meet. The 100 backstroke had no Fairport swimmers contesting the race. At this point, Pittsford took the first lead of the day with a first, fourth, and seventh place finish.The 100 breast stroke saw Legg earning important third place points and Clare Ostrom place 17th. The meet was to be decided by the final 400 freestyle relay. Fairport had to place first and Pittsford fourth or lower for Fairport to win the meet and sectional crown. The team of Jessica Blaha, Marlyas Fuqua, Becky Potvin, and Jamie Adams proved up to the challenge as they won by over 5 seconds with a time of 3:38.94 just 1 second off the meet record. These four girls will swim the relay at the state meet next week in Buffalo. The excitement continued as Penfield placed second, and Irondequoit just touched out Pittsford for third place. Fairport had won the sectional crown. The Fairport swimmers and fans were ecstatic - this was the closest win ever in the history of Section 5 swimming. The swimmers stood on the block holding the sectional trophy high, excited that they were able to uphold the Fairport tradition and extend their reign as sectional champions for another season.
