Panthers Out Touched by Raiders

December 14, 2000 - The perennial big swim meet of the season pitting Pittsford against Fairport came early this year...maybe too early for the host, Pittsford Panthers. At the end of the splash, Fairport held a group jump into the Mendon High School pool to celebrate their 102-84 victory, avenging losses in the prior two seasons.

For Pittsford, the effort can be summed up by 1.39 seconds. That s the difference in times that accumulated into the 18-point gap, which was the margin of victory. A lot of factors can add up to 1.39 seconds across 12 events and 60 places. It could be a little better streamline off the wall; the timing of the forward stroke on the fly or breast to hit the touch pad; engaging the finishing kick just a little sooner; or an added week of 7,000 yard practices. No doubt, coach Mark Morris will use the experience as a motivating object lesson for the balance of the season.

The meet began with an opening Fairport surprise, loading up their medley relay with talent to steal first in a photo finish. Pittsford came back with their strong middle distance freestylers, Luke Weniger and Paul Corsello finishing 1,2 with room to spare in the 200 free.

In the 200 IM, Brian Hunter and Dave Dobrzynski took second and fourth, with Hunter overtaking the third place opponent at the tail of the breast stroke leg. The sprint, 50 free was extremely competitive, with Pittsford's Chris Rapach and Evan Koenig finishing in second and third. Despite a sub 24-second effort, Matt Lazio finished sixth and out of the points.

Diving was another event which Fairport dominated, out pointing Pittsford's developing duo of underclassmen, Matt Joseph and Ryan Cunningham.

After the diving break, Pittsford picked up middle spots in the 100 fly and 100 free with second place finishes by Lazio and Weniger, fourths by Nick Monu and Chris Rapach, and a fifth by Kyle Wilson in the fly.

Hunter and Corsello finished in the top spots of the 500 free and Koenig added a first in the 100 back with John Arington taking a surprising second and PJ Dunn third in the 100 breast.

The 200 free relay team of Weniger, Rapach, Dobrzynski and Koenig took first, but the strong 400 free team of Weniger, Lazio, Corsello and Hunter had to settle for second in the final race of the meet.

Whereas last year, Pittsford JV swimmers were edged out by Fairport, this year, the Panthers dominated, sending Fairport home on the short end of a 118-52 score. Pittsford swept first in all events with individual firsts by Greg Conklin, Zach Whitman, Jeremy Amon, Kyle Jozefski and Matt Vaughn. The first place relay teams were manned by Amon, Jozefski, Vaughn, Whitman, Amon, Conklin and Tyler Topping.

The task ahead for the Panthers is to avoid a let down against a tough Webster team up next and to shave tenths of seconds over the balance of the season in preparation for a second shot at Fairport in the sectionals.
