November 30, 2000 - Fairport swimmers splashed their way to victory Saturday in the 27th annual Pittsford Water Polo Invitational Benefit in the Pittsford Sutherland High School pool. Fairport beat Webster 10-7 in the championship game. To reach the finals, Fairport defeated Greece Athena 14-8 in the semifinals and Webster stopped Pittsford 10-8. Interestingly, the Red Raiders didn't play traditional rival Pittsford (last year's winner) in the entire tournament. The tournament began on Friday with a morning and afternoon round-robin sessions. Fairport played in the morning bracket along with Greece Arcadia, Webster, Gates Chili. Pittsford played in the afternoon bracket along with Rush-Henrietta, Penfield, Churchville-Chili and Greece Athena. In the morning grouping, Fairport lost to Arcadia 7-6, beat Webster 9-5, and dunked Gates Chili 18-1. Webster sank Gates Chili 17-2, defeated Arcadia 13-5, and lost to Fairport 9-5. Fairport and Webster scored the most goals in the round-robin and advanced to Saturday's semifinals. Pittsford beat Rush-Henrietta 9-2, Churchville-Chili 12-6, Athena 13-5 and Penfield 11-4 in the afternoon round-robin. Athena also advanced with wins over Rush-Henrietta 10-5, Penfield 11-3, and Churchville 9-7. Athena lost to Pittsford 13-5. After losing to Webster 10-8 in the semifinals, Pittsford rallied for a 12-7 win over Athena to claim the consolation title. Special thanks are extended to Monroe County swimming alumni Josh Nauman, Steffan Lucas, Scott Shields, Chris Roman and Pat Danner for their help in officiating. Seth Sealfon provided necessary support in pre-event organization of referees. Pizza and subs were provided for the tournament concessions by Brian Frey of Domino s Pizza and Gary Nauman of Subway Subs. The purpose of this benefit is to raise money for the American Diabetes Association campership fund and to promote fun and good sportsmanship. Many high schools collected money and made team donations.
