October 17, 2000 - On a clear sunny Tuesday, Oct. 17, the Fairport varsity She-Sharks faced their biggest meet of the season yet: the undefeated Pittsford Panthers. They responded to the challenge in traditional Fairport style by incredible swims and spectacular finishes. The meet began with the traditional Senior Salute which honored the five graduating seniors: diver Jenny Cole and swimmers Kay Gebben, Krista Larson and co-captains Carla Reidy and Kristen Schirmuhly. The varsity guys team presented them with flowers, the Booster Club with Wheaties boxes with their pictures on them, and the team gave the traditional cheers and "run through the team" culminated with the "jump off the block with warm-ups." It was a nice beginning for a fierce competition. The meet began with the 200 medley relay team of Kristen Schirmuhly, Nicole Dibello, Krista Larson and Katelyn Byrnes placing second behind a traditionally strong Pittsford medley relay team, with the team of Susan Baylor, Jill Diesel, Gillian Micoli and Kellie Kong in fourth and the team of Lauren Petersen, Maureen McCullough, Brianne Duffy and Carla Reidy placing sixth. In the 200 freestyle, Christy Breen swam a strong excellent race to outdistance the Pittsford swimmers by over two seconds and first place with a best time. Erin Legg swam to fourth place and Rachel Gelman placed sixth. The 200 IM was another thrilling race as the Fairport girls placed 1-3-5 to rack up some points and close Pittsford's lead. Jamie Adams won her duel with the Pittsford swimmer with a lifetime best swim as Schirmuhly placed third and Megan McGraw earned fifth-place points, both with best times. The Pittsford lead was only two points. The 50 free, a usual Fairport strength, grabbed 1-3-4 places with Larson winning with a season-best time and Jessica Blaha placing third and Becky Potvin placing fourth with a best time. Fairport had gained the lead 33-29 after the 50 free. Fairport's Laurissa Prystaj dove in spectacular fashion earning first-place points and breaking a school, pool and sectional record on the way. Jenny Cole placed fifth. At this point, Fairport was ahead by two points. The swimming resumed with the 100 fly which was won by Pittsford, but Fairport placed 2-4-5 in another exciting race with Larson second, Katie Barbato fourth with a best time, and Dibello earning fifth-place points. The score was tied at 47. The 100 freestyle found Fairport placing Blaha second, Potvin fourth and Byrnes sixth, with Potvin and Byrnes getting best times. The 500 free was another exciting race as Breen swam an incredibly strong best time with Dibello also strong in battling for third place. McGraw also swam a strong race placing sixth. The 200 free relay proved to be another strong showing for Fairport as the team of Larson, Adams, Blaha and Legg placed first followed by Breen, Potvin, Byrnes and Dibello in third, and the team of Kong, Gelman, Duffy and Courtney Ames placing fifth. The 100 backstroke, another Pittsford strength, was shocked in Fairport's great finishes of Schirmuhly winning in 1:02.86 with an incredible effort and Legg and Baylor placing third and fifth to extend the lead. The breast stroke found Adams winning in 1:09.58 with Diesel and McCullough placing fifth and sixth. The lead was at six points: Fairport needed to win or place second and third in the last event. The last race, the 400 free relay, was another thriller for the crowd. The team of Blaha, Potvin, Schirmuhly and Adams swam a season-best time. The first three swimmers swam stroke for stroke with Pittsford slightly ahead. The fourth swimmer for Pittsford dove in and was about two body lengths ahead of Adams but in another incredible effort she caught her at the last turn and won the race. The team of McGraw, Breen, Baylor and Legg placed third and the team of Micoli, Peterson, Reidy and Ames placed fifth. In all, it was a spectacular finish to an always competitive meet between these two swimming teams. The final score was 99-87.
